Another Video Card Question
« on: March 26, 2002, 08:02:41 AM »
I just installed a GeForce 3 ti200, to replace my GeForce 2 Pro. I see no improvement at all in fps. I get about 35 fps just flying from base to base, with significant drops when in combat. Fps drop as low as 10-12, but usually range in the low to mid 20's when dogfighting.

Net connection tends to be OK, if not great. Usually pings at 70-80 prior to entering arena, but then spikes quite a bit when playing.

I installed the latest drivers (28.32).

I ran NVMax.exe a tweak utility that guided me through a number of adjustments that I'm certain can be made directly by those who know how.

Specifically: anti-aliasing is turned off for both DirectX and OpenGL. V-sync is turned off in both. Fog table emulation is turned on. GeForce accelleration is turned on. Buffer Region Extension and Buffer Region Use Video Memory are turned on. Fast Mipmap Filtering is on. Filtering Mode - Bilinear or Trilinear.

Also, a squatemate had me go into Desktop Properties and do the following:
Refresh Rate: optimal
Mipmap quality is set to best performance vs. best picture
Texture Memory Use is set to lowest use of memory (1 or 2 MB vs defaults of 5 or 6)

Appreciate any other ideas.

My system:
733 mhz PentiumIII (Dell)
384 MB RDRAM
GeForce 3 ti200
Creative SBLive soundcard
*Motherboard Specs: Don't even know how to check   :-/

Thank you.

Your CPU is the bottleneck...

AH is Direct3D so any changes you make in OpenGL settings make no difference.  Make sure 3d antialiasing is OFF.

I recommend setting your refresh rate manually.  I run 85hz at 1024x768

Thank you SKurj.

I'll manually set the refresh rate as suggested. (85 is the maximum refresh rate supported by my Dell monitor, as it happens.) I am running at 1024x768 now.

I'm surprised that a 733 PIII is not enough cpu to run this game adequately. I guess I'll get a new computer. (amazing how much we go through, and how much we spend to play these flight simms.)

I recommend you turn V-synch back ON.  With it off, your CPU/video card is drawing fames that you may never see.  That's kindof a waste. :)  Also there have been reported gunnery problems in the past when folks disabled V-synch.

Turn it off to benchmark, but make sure V-synch is enabled for gameplay.

You also don't say what resolution and color depth you are running.  That may be part of the issue.

Try running at higher resolutions and color depth.

A Geforce III isn't much faster than a Geforce II at 1024 x 768,but it will shine at 1280 x 1024 and higher.

Smaug

I run 1024 x 768 x16bpp and the game is more than playable

I have a duron 800 and GF2 MX

Also please note your 733 is 2 year old technology...

It's not the game.  Your CPU is too slow to make the video card you have work to its potential.

As an example.  The original ATI Radeon needed a 800Mhz or faster CPU to push the video card to its limits.  Your GF3 card is faster than the original Radeon and thus will need a CPU to generate all the data fast enough to keep it busy and/or push the card to its full potential.

He may have something hogging resources somewhere.  I get almost exactly as many FPS as he does (mid to upper 30's flying around, low to mid 20's in most combat, drops to as low as 10 or so in thick combat), and my system is nowhere near as good as his--I run AH on a P3 500 with 256 RAM and a VooDoo 3 2000.   Nothing in my PC--not even drivers--is newer than about 2 1/2 years old.

Thanks for all the advice, folks.

FYI: currently running True Color 32-bit, 1024x768.

I regularly go into the system to make sure I don't have a bunch of extra stuff starting up and running in the background. Checking resouces from My Computer/ Properties/ Performance shows System Resources to be 94% free.

As per all the recommendations, I'll tinker with the following settings, and let you folks know how it turns out:

I am going to manually set Monitor Refresh Rate to 85 and I am going to turn color down to True Color 16 bit (Thanks SKurj)

I am going to turn V-synch back on (thanks Lephturn)

I am going to turn resolution up to 1280 x 1024 (thanks sox62)

What version of direct X do you have?  Since AH runs I know you've got either DX 8.0a or 8.1.  If you do have 8.0a, I've found 8.1 gives slightly higher framerates.  You can check the version you have by clicking start -> run -> type "dxdiag" and press enter.  Wait for a while until a window pops up.

Near the bottom of the Window it should tell you your DirectX version.  (It will say 8.1 if you have 8.1.)

Direct X can be downloaded at http://www.microsoft.com/directx .

Better frame rates! Thank you everbody. I very much appreciate your assistance.

Results: I generally fly around with fps in high 40's to low 50's occasionally visiting the 60's. Most dogfights are played within the 30's range, with occassional drops into 20's and lower. So I get very dramatic differences, probably due to a lack of computing power as many of you mentioned, but overall I am doing MUCH better.

It's hard to tell what adjustments did what, since we got the patch yesterday. I did most of my testing OFFline prior to going online for the final test, and prior to downloading the patch.

I made one change at a time to better determine what was going to be effective. Fps continuously changed as I flew -- I basically looked for highs, lows, and tried to get a feel for average fps by simply watching them as I attacked the drones offline.

It seems that the largest single improvement came from dropping color depth to High Color 16 bit (down from True Color 32 bit). Other changes, including turning V-sync on/off, and adjusting screen resolution did not seem to make a difference. Although it occurs to me now as I write, that I did not delete the video7.cfg file in Aces High so that I could adjust the resolution used by the game. Wonder if that would've made any difference? Changing the Monitor Refresh Rate from "optimal" to 85, then 75, seemed to negatively affect fps, so I changed it back to "optimal" (fyi: Dell P991 monitor).

One thing that I find interesting; Regardless of what change was made, and even now after the patch, my fps always start at about 30 when I take off (offline) and gradually work their way to 35 by the time my wheels lift. At about 20 feet I am up to 40 fps. These numbers have always been the same. I presume that will change after I get a more powerful computer.

Summary: I am a happy camper. I'll upgrade eventually, but can play in the meantime without too much trouble. :-)

bloom25,

I have DirectX 8.1

DirectX files tab: "no problems found"

Display tab: When I tested DirectDraw, I did NOT see alternating black and white lines on the edge of the rectangle. This left me with a "failure at step 5" test result. Do you think this is significant?

All Direct3D tests were successful.

Also, I noticed a note that "the file nvdisp.drv is not digitally signed..." Important?

Input tab: "Problems found in the system registry. Details available in the saved text file."  This text file says: "You should reinstall DirectX."

I'll do that. Thanks for your help.
