Still having the same old problem with photoshop...
« on: March 26, 2002, 07:06:40 PM »
... I can't open AH screenshot BMP files (Alt S) with photoshop. In order to edit them in photoshop I have to go through mspaint and cut, then save it was jpg, then open it in photoshop. wtf?

Is there anyway to make this easier?

open both paint and photoshop at the same time.

open the AH screen shot in paint.

select all.

copy.

go to photoshop.

ctrl N  -  (creat new document, notice it will be the same dimensions of the AH screen shot that you just copied)

paste.

ta-daa.

but i agree, wish Photoshop would just open them damn AH bitmaps from the beginning.

Nath I open screenshots in paint first; click once somewhere in pic once and shut it after that. It asks if I'd like to save changes ->ok and it's saved as a bmp. Then I just drag the pic to the photoshop and that's it.

It bugs the hell out of me too! :)  I use ACDSee to re-save them as bitmaps, and then they open in Photoshop fine.

Go HERE and get Irfanview, the damn thing will open any graphic or multi-media file made.

It's fantastic for resizing or converting images to a new format, does slide shows, renaming or batch conversions are a snap, simply the best image viewer ever produced.

Why are you guys playing with photoshop -kind piece of software? If you have lots of time in your hands, then photoshop is for you. Otherwise check Ulead Photoimpact, the best software I've found so far. I'm not professional graphics producer and that's why Photoimpact is best for me. You can make job done fast without learning 3 years of different features ;) Photoimpact is focused on web graphics and has good tools built in. Worth of trying IMO.

I'm sure PS is good software, but I've faced many ppl praising for PS just because once upon the time PS was THE image editor. After few "ok I do this in PhotoImpact like this, how you do it in PS?" compare, they're beaten :) (actually at that point I usually notice that they don't know how to use their PS's, they are just praising it because many professional graphic companies are using it (this is because workers are used to use it, not because it's best)) Ok, now I stop, I already see hordes of PS defenders running here with their swords :D

OK, I'll put simple example.
You want to crop a image from AH screenshot? :

1. Open original image

"open" -dialog has preview window as some other editors too.

2. Crop the area

3. "Ctrl+C" (Copy)

4. "Ctrl+Shift+V" (Paste as a new image)

Photoimpact creates automatically right size image, no need to manually put dimenssions.

5. "F4" (Image Optimizer)

You can first choose on what format you want the image be (1.)
Simply pull the slider for different qualities (2.) You can view final result in preview window in real time. This is not good example image, because image was optimized already.
For "JPG" -format you have different presets to choose from:
- JPEG Q90 PROGRESSIVE
- JPEG Q75 PROGRESSIVE
- JPEG Q50 PROGRESSIVE
- JPEG Q75 GRAYSCALE
- JPEG Q50 GRAYSCALE

This whole process takes less than 15 seconds (Including opening and saving). From original AH screenshot BMP to cropped final optimized JPG image. Pretty effective software, no?
BTW, above images are:
1.gif
2.jpg
3.jpg
4.png
All optimized :)

EDIT: File types supported (open file) by PhotoImpact 7.0:

001 (Hayes JT Fax)

Vector,
those file associations are with your computer only, I associated all my bmp's, jpg's, tiff, etc.... to my micrografx picture publisher program. Everytime I click on one of those files the picture publisher open em no problem.

How to set file preference:
In windows 95-me
1. click start
2. settings
3. control panel
4. "tools" from pull down menu
5. folder options
6. file types tab
7. highlight the "file type" you want to modify.
8. under the "details for file type", there is an "opens with" listing and it has a change option.
9. click on the "change option" then browse for the program you want to open it with.
10. reboot and return to windows to try.

I do suggest writing down the original file settings as you are changing all associations for that file type. In other words, use this carefully, I assume no responsibility when you click on sheep.bmp and real player comes up and starts playing your cd. Make sure you set the proper application to open the file. :D

paintshop pro (free download) will BATCH convert them for you.
I convert all my screenshots at once, then pull them into Photoshop.

Just write a plug-in to interpret 32-bit bmp images.
