Killing troops with ordinance
« on: March 22, 2002, 09:45:36 AM »
This started out as a discussion in the general forum and took a weird twist.  Therefore I’m going to bring it up here and try and bring the issue to focus.

It had been discussed that spawn points were close enough that M3’s could be spawned, drop troops, tower and spawn again.  The troops being within walking distance allowed for a massive troop attack.  Superfly responded stating that identified spawn points with this problem would be moved.  That is very cool, thank you; however, in my opinion that is not the real issue.

The real issue is not being able to kill troops with bombs or rockets.  It appears that only direct hits from ball ammunition is the only way to stop them.  Move the spawn point and the same affect can be achieved by a coordinated attack with few handfuls of M3’s.  I’ve seen it done before.  5 or 6 columns of troops running, 2K bombs and 8 rockets later and not one of them appeared to have fallen.

This may have more to do with the blast area of a bomb and/or rocket than it does the toughness of a troop.  Can anyone provide an explanation of why it is so difficult or impossible to kill troops with ordinance?  Does it have to do with bomber pin point accuracy that blast radius’s are reduced?  Have the troops been assimilated by the Borg and have an adaptable invisible shield to ordinance?

It seems to me that if I drop 2K worth of bombs it should kill any flesh-covered weapon within 150-200 feet.  Maybe my scale is off in the game and that distance is equal to half an inch from 1000 feet up.  I don’t know.

Any ideas or explanations?

Thanks,

I sat just outside a town under attack in an Ostie, pounding the doorway of the map room with 37mm, and watched 10 troops stroll inside without a casualty.  They seem "overmodeled".  :)

However, there may be gameplay considerations that make this a Good Thing.  Not sure.

LOL just saw that happen.  Me and a p47 were dropping bombs and strafing them and i was using a bf110 with 6 cannons 2x500kg bombs and didnt do anything to the troops , there were only 10 of them and every damn one ran a klick to the town and captured it. But if same trooops hangin in the silk they die easily.

Oh yeah i forgot..there was a flak blasting away at them also from about 1.1-1.5k and couldnt kill them...he did however kill every m3  that spawned ..after the initial troop release.

The troops are super ubermen! One thing though, they always travel single file and are awlways grouped together in a line from drop point to the map room. Since they can't dive for cover while under attack I feel that some sort of uberness is needed for gameplay considerations. Any troop standing while a 2k bomb hit any where within a 200 foot radius would be shurely killed or severly disabled from either the blast wave or debris. However, surviveability would greatly increase if they were able to hit the dirt before the explosion. I think there are no anti personel type bombs modeled in AH so bomb fragment injuries would be very low unless depending on how close to the impact point they were.

It all boils down to that since we are able to target them so very easily that some sort of gameplay consession is needed, but how much?

If memory serves me right, HTC made em supertough after we had the problem with people from your own team PURPOSELY shoot your troops to screw up a take or to give the field take to their friend goon carrier that had already dropped or that was about to drop.

I wouldve preffered to have friendly troops have killshooter on them rather than make all troops be unholy strong ;)

Need to catch troops dropped from a goon while they are still in the air...  :)

And when they come from M3 flossy? Right now 2 fighters can flatten town and have a huge horde of m3's (say,8 or more) speed to within a mile of the town and release the troops, respawn and come with more.

Even if the enemy tries to strafe them, there comes a point where there's just so many troops that need to literally be hit by a 20mm round between the eyes to kill that the field gets taken.

If anything, the pre-fix bugged spawns that left the m3's just outside the town proves that. We had our own gvs firing at the troops as they walked by and through our fire straight into the map room. :p
