Boeing 307 Crashes/Ditches
« on: March 28, 2002, 04:34:59 PM »
The recently restored Boeing 307 just crashed/ditched or rolled into a body of water in Seattle. I don't know what happened or if it's in Puget Sound or Lake George (or something else) but I just heard that on the TV. All 8 people on board got out safely, which is good. I'm just bummed because I was hoping to see that plane this year! I'm sure Boeing isn't too thrilled about it either :(

THAT was one beautiful restoration.

Hope they're up to doing it one more time.

It did an emergency landing in Lake Union. Lake Union is a small body of water (fresh) between the larger Lake Washington, and the locks which give access to Puget Sound (salt). The plane sank in water shallow enough to be easily recovered.

If they had to do a water landing, they picked the right spot. There is so much floatplane activity there that the boaters know to watch for planes landing on the water.

The 307 was the prototype for all post-war airliners.  It used the tail & wings of the B-17.

There's some good info and pics at the web site below.

There's video of the crash making the rounds today.  He came down with his right wing low.  Lucky he didn't rip it off and flip the thing.

Update,
They recovered the plane from salt water today.
It’s out of the water and being rinsed off to prevent corrosion from the salt.  Didn’t look to badly damaged, some damage to the right wing and one engine looks pretty torn up.
They plan to begin restoration immediately.
