hmm seems you should have higher rates than that. What type of pc is your new machine? what type of memory (DDR, SDRAM, RDRAM)? I had similar problem with 1.8 gig system, corrected when I got the latest directx version from microsoft. It sounds like your system isn't fully using the video card capability. Is this system a custom build? If your system is a custom, your agp could be configured wrong in your bios....Your refresh rate is ok at 75, you shouldn't see any difference between 75 and optimal settings. I am not too familiar with the ATI Raedon so I do not know what it should be able to kick out :( . One last thing, is this an agp vid card? Only reason I ask is I know a guy who bought a new pc for the game...with no agp slot

later, bock

do a clean format, reinstall windows 98, reinstall directx 8.1, reinstall video and sound drivers, install AH, and watch your FPS fly.

Someting definately odd about your computer.  I have virtually the same setup, except it is a 1.8Ghz processor, and get around 65-70 FPS in the tower, with clipboard up, at 1280x1024x32.  It really does not drop much in normal filght.

What resolution are you running?  You do know the 8500 performs better in 32 bit mode versus 16 bit mode?

Those number are REALLY LOW for your system.  Check all the basic stuff, including Direct-X version.  Also be sure you didnt instlal your video card drivers over the old ones.  If so, delete your drivers, reboot into standard VGA then re-install ( recomend newest beta drivers...they rock).

Also be sure you dont have anything sneeky going on in your system hogging resources.

I run a 1.3 Athlon 256 DDR and a Radeon 8500, and at 1600x1200 32bit 2xFSAA 16x Antistropic whatever, and my frame rates are 30-45 on the ground at a large field (with some smoke) and quickly raise over 50-75 once off the ground or a few hundred yards from a large base.

Theres something needs tweeking

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but I'll bet thats an OEM ATI 8500.  If it is, his FPS is about what I'd expect (I'm slightly higher with a 1.7ghz P4 and the OEM version of the card).

2late4u's idea is good..did you just put this card in? In windows 98 you need to set your system to a basic adapter like vga before installing your new card and drivers...that pain is gone in win2k and xp. Your card is probably agp since you are running a 1.6 gig p4 (agp slot is a brown slot on the motherboard). If your old ram fits onto the motherboard, you most likely have the sdram, check and make sure your old ram is pc133, not pc100. Oh, one other quickie is to make sure you have non-essential programs off (like instant messanger, realplayer, etc.), you only need your browser, the game, and your anitvirus/firewall software (oh and joystick type stuff :) ).

good luck
