other than the cliché old man moaning sadly in the background, I think this was very well done.

Fuzzy math Animal,

Of the 100 people, how many of them are children?..25? He didn't include that in the flash movie. That makes a big difference in the equasion.

So at the end when he says 1 billion people can't read.. well yeah their mostly kids.

Completely irrelevant. The kids that have access to education will for most part learn to read and will replace their parents in that category. The kids without education never will and will also replace their parents in these kinds of survey likewise.

Also, there's the fact that that figure is for adult population only. See for example http://www.sil.org/literacy/LitFacts.htm

A quote:

"According to UNESCO, in the world today there are about 1 billion non-literate adults.
This 1 billion is approximately 26 percent of the world's adult population."

Many kids in my children’s classes couldn't read at 8 yr.
Mine where reading simple books to me before they started school.  I think the statement about illiterate children taking the place of illiterate parents is dead-on.

If you're counting on the schools to teach your kids the important stuff they are going to let you down.

Be wary of charities trying to justify their existance.  They will exagerate to prove a point.

I could tear into the stats and all they do/don't include... but its all irrelivant.

The amount of people willing to be helped will always be overshadowed by the few people that aren't going to allow it.  We can send food... it can get seized.  We can send books... they can get burned.  We can send medicine... it can expire.  In the end, we can spend way too much money to get way too little done.

Unless someone is willing to go in by force and set up governments in each and every nation... this will always be the way it is.

So.. I do what I can with what I make in my community.  I donate to my neighbors to help them out.  I give my time to friends and family to help make their lives better.  Seems to me that's how things get better.

Or.. did we want to turn this into a world economy discussion?

Got news for ya, you (royal "you") are the system. Public education is what you made/make it.

Read: I'm too lazy to investigate international charites, and to educate myself about them.  So, I will offer a crappy rationalization for not helping people in other countries.  But I will contribute to local problems so I don't feel like a total cretin.

We few, we happy few, we brand our brothers
We few, we happy few, eat hamburgers at McDonald's
We few, we happy few, we small, so small but great
We few, we happy few, we band or brothers or band of lemmings, what does it matter, after all only the ignorant are happy, but they're not few, they are alot, so then we many, we happy many.
We few, we happy few, we feel we are happy...ooo yes we are
We few, we happy few a little of us goes a little weep
We few, we happy few you many many fools
We few, we happy few anyone else to tear apart the peace
We few, we happy few us without ebola!
