What music to you play in background?
« on: April 19, 2000, 11:09:00 AM »
Someone asked me once, what background music do I like to play when enjoying my addiction to Aces High.

Well, I used to play Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries", which I'm sure many of you remember as being popularized in the movie, "Apocalypse Now".

Lately, since AH released the ground vehicles, I have switched to an old tank marching tune called Panzerlied.  When I was a young warrior in the Canadian Armored Corps back in the early 60's, my very first Troop Sergeant's name was Pottkamper.  You guessed it.    He was a re-tread and re-mustered German Panzer driver from WWII and of course, his favorite song was Panzerlied.  The daily march to get to our tank compound was about 3 miles, so he taught us this song to sing along the way, complete with German words.  It also was later popularized in a Hollywood movie titled "The Battle of the Bulge".  One day, an old British Colonel got so upset that we were singing a German military song, we all got 5 days of extra duty and old Sgt. Pottkamper got 3 days in the guard house.  After that, we still used to sing it anyway, except we watched for that old Colonel before we struck up the chorus.

I still remember this song like it was yesterday and often sing it in the shower.  I found a copy on-line, which for some reason is complete with explosions and sound effects.  I've had it going lately in the background on my stereo as I do battle in our trusty AH variety Panzer IV's.  My wife came downstairs last night as I was slugging it out with SUPERFLY and NATEDOG in Panzer battle, with Panzerlied blaring loudly.  She remarked, "are you having a mid life crisis or something?"

Well, that certainly burst my bubble of realism.

Anyway, for any of you tankers out there who want to really get into it while driving your Panzer IV, here's a link to the German Army Chorus singing Panzerlied.  There's a WAV file and a MIDI version.  Get the WAV file (1.5 megs) as it has the complete version with words and music.  Let me know what you think.

 http://members.aol.com/debheitmann/private/pzlied.htm

For a short cut, this is a direct download of the WAV file.

So, now what do the rest of you play while flying or driving in AH?

Regards,
Badger

Hmm, can't stand to have  music  playing, I need  to hear  the stall horn, wind speed, guns hits on my canopy, etc. to play at what I consider a dismal competitive level.  Does my kids in the background fighting over toys count as  music?

Music during game play just gets filtered out as I concentrate on the sim.  A local Seattle station plays hits from the 40's on weekends (880 on the AM) which adds that little extra feel from the bygone era that we all fly in.

I very often have my radio scanner going, however.  I've got almost 100 local (and often used) MilAir frequencies programmed for ATC, Air Refueling, Ops and Airport comms.  Its a lot like the random chatter one would here while actually flying.  Its all about immersion and this adds to the experience.  I've been thinking about more "environmental modeling" by involve yet another sense into the equation - smell.  It wouldn't be too hard to find relic pieces of aircraft hardware to impart the "personality" found in a cockpit: oil, hydraulic fluid, fuel, sweat, worn fabric etc.  Anyone who's been in a well used warbird knows this well!  ...Just have to make sure I have the computer's olfactory simulation set up in its own area to keep the significant others from complaining too much

Hey Mig, thanks for the heads up on that  880 am, I love big band era Music (Grandfather was a drummer for many smaller bands back then), too bad it's limited to week-ends.

Too often, we lose sight of life's simple pleasures.  Remember, when
someone annoys you it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown, BUT, it
only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and slap the sucker
upside the head!

Heya badger I know the panzerlied by heart

I'm studying history and one day the professor stepped in the lecture hall and handed out papers with the lyrics to this song. We then all started singing (at least the boys did, girls realy don't go for this kind of nonsense  )

What he tried to prove was the fact that through a song you can change someones mentality about an issue. (he was right, there we all were singing very loud and enjoying it a german wartime song).

Never forgot that course

Well I always say that I like a lot of kind of music, maybe because I like the music appropiate for each moment. I find Bryan Adams a good musician, In fact I have gone to several concerts and one of them was the best one in my life.

I like B.A. I like Bon Jovi...
I also like Barricada, Iron Maiden, Extremoduro, DefCon2, Sepultura and more hard groups. But, really I dont see the point in putting that kind of music when I am flying.

I dont care about commercial singers, or radical ones. As long as I like the songs, is okay with me...seems that what your music liking is greatly conditioned by your prejuices. That is sad, from my point of view.

and I suggest you to answer things in a less ironic way. I took is as a kind of joke, but the tone was really offensive,and I could've taken it as an insult,too.

Jean Sibelius: Finlandia
(Eng.Lyrics:Katharina von Schlegel)

 Be Still, My soul

Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heav'nly Friend
Thro' thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and wind still know
His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hast' ning on
When we shall be forevr with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone.
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when changes and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
