Udie actually I like Yanks; You are very interesting people :)

btw is there any chance that Colin Powell would be your next president? Seems like he is a intelligent man and imo much better choice than what you have now :)

I'm just growing tired of the anti-americans out there. I can only hope that one day he will learn first hand what it is to be a victim of terrorism.

And I for one am growing tired of your constant bleating about terrorism, like no-one on the planet ever had experience of it before 9-11. You're like some new born Christian, unable to even talk about the weather without bringing your 'new' insight into the discussion. It's boring. EVERYONE was appalled by the WTC attack - but you overstate the case beyond reason.

To wish that someone be a victim of terrorism is absurd and proves you're little grasp of reality. I have family who lived under the cloud of terrorism for years; my girlfriend was from Inniskillin (NI) and has some very interesting stories to tell.

So who are you to go wishing acts of terrorism on random people you don't know? Idiot.

On the subject of the thread:

This was a munitions factory in a not particularly developed country. You can bet your arse there's no Health and Safety body regulating what they do. It probably WAS an accident, and not neccessarily the opening paragraph in some trashy Tom Clancy novel.

I also think the CIA hasn't been sitting on its hands all these years.

Doubtfull that Powell could make a run in 2004, since modern political parties will always nominate an incumbent. If the GOP take some political hit between now and next year, I could see Cheney dropping out for "Health Reasons" and Powell being brought onto the ticket as the "wise statesmen" VP.  Right now it's way too early to project though IMHO.

In all honesty, the only reason Colin Powell is not our first black President was because he chose not to pursue it. Who were our contenders? Bush, Gore, McCain? Powell would have squashed them all (and I would have voted for him as well).

There's always 2004, I suppose. Given the likely announcement of Hillary's bid for office, Gore's promise to run again (though I doubt he can get the nomination) and a few other Dem possibilities (Kerry?) it still looks as though the Repubs stand a better than average shot whoever they put up. And, assuming the Enron thing does not turn up a smoking gun, there would be no reason Bush couldn't run again at this point, though we know how these things turn on a dime.

For the benefit of Weazel, my order of preference in the last election was Powell, McCain, Bush. I have been pleasantly surprised by his performance so far, and given a choice between him and Hillary... well, you know how I would vote. ;) Bob Kerry might pull me off the Repub ticket, but I want to watch him a bit more.

How's this for a hijack?

Sorry Eagler. It seems I inadvertantly attacked an American institution! :D

Ripsnort. I didn't hijack anything - I'll repeat what I said about the explosion if it makes you feel better. ;)

I'm with Udie.. I'm sick of the '9-11; you deserved it" innuendo dribbiling outta the nether orifices of our european comrades.

I used to think that Truman and Marshall were hero's for restoring europe and asia to europeans and asians after the war.. now I'm not so sure.. we shoulda had McDonalds in Moscow and GM in Tokyo by 1962 instead.

As for the Middle East.. we had a good chance when Carter was president. He shoulda turned the 52 american hostages into 52 american martyrs and tehran into a glass crater. The fediddlein middle east would be very quiet now.
The price of Freedom is the willingness to do sudden battle, anywhere, any time and with utter recklessness...

...at home, or abroad.
