I get  between 40-70 fps at 800x600 on a PII350 and Hercules Prophet 4000XT. Pretty good for me.

herryFE:

I've found that the stock answer to these types of questions on this board is to "upgrade your system."  "Buy a new this or a new that",   -- usually the component/brand the poster uses.
Of course that will work; it's often a valid answer.

But....
Given your question, here's what worked for me:

Click on the VIDEO button on the clipboard you get when you start up AH.

I have the "Enable mip mapping" box and the "Disable Palettized Textures" box CHECKED.   I have absolutely no clue what these mean in layman's terms, but someone else suggested them in another post awhile back, so I tried it.  My frame rate increased.  (It may have been a coincidence, but it can't damage your setup to try it.  If someone can explain these functions to an old fart, I'm interested.)

Under 'Video Res.' on the left, start with the lowest resulution (at the top).
Under 'Color Depth', start with 16 Bit.
Under "Max Frame Rate," start with Unlimited.

Run AH (online) and see if it improves.  If so, then you can experiment with clicking the next box down in each of the areas until you get the best possible video/play quality at a framerate that's acceptable to you.

I've found that it's pretty much a 'trial-and-error' process for non-video-gaming-savvy folks like myself.

There are also tweak programs out like RivaTuner  that will allow you to tweak your TNT card to squeeze out some better performance.

Try also using SHIFT F1, SHIFT F2 and SHIFT F3 to change your horizont range. You may experiment an enormous fps gain.

Also turn ground clutter off, I believe it's control C, it helps a lot when flying close to the ground near an airfield

Run AH at the same resolution as your desktop!

Often the game will run faster at 1024x768 than at 800x600... many don't believe that statement until they try it..

Tried all these, made no difference whatsoever.

I'm going to guess my problem is something very particular that is slowing the whole game up and not just a regular frame rate problem.

Hey herry FE. Never mind these guys with their flashy systems. If you're strapped for cash it's not an option. Scour the second hand market. You'll pick up celeron 800's for peanuts which will overclock to 900mhz no prob. Second hand Geforce2 GTS as well are out there. All the crazy guys (like me)  who must upgrade their kit every year are offloading tons of stuff.  AH will play great on a pIII600 with a second gen Geforce card and 256mb PC100 RAM.

Don't load up WinXP on a machine like that though!

Also, well done for sticking with your kit for as long as poss. A lesson there for all of us

:D

Also well done HTC for keeping the game playable on older machines.
