Coulda been a Contender?
« on: April 19, 2000, 07:50:00 PM »
Pyro, HT,

Besides for SWOTL, I don't think this plane has ever been modeled in a game....be kinda nice to have instead of a Me-262

Heinkel He-162 Salamander
popularly known as Volksjager
 "People's Fighter"

For info check this site:HE-162

Very cool plane-but us Luftwaffles aren`t allowed to have anything that will outrun the American planes.   <tounge in cheek>

Here's the deal, you can have it IF you can prove anyone ever survived bailing out of the thing.  Engine being right behind the canopy sure don't make it easy to bail from.

(Anyone remember why the F-107 didn't go into production?   )

Wasn't this the first plane with a downward firing ejection seat?  Anyway, I don't think any of these planes made it into combat.

I'm not perfectly sure, but wasn't it called the "volksjager" because it was cheap? I.E. Made out of wood

The ejection seat fired upwards, only some idiot would put in a seat that fires down!(F-104 )

The He 162 was made largely of wood, and was designed to be built by relatively unskilled workers. It had no armour for the pilot, and only 2x20mm cannon with 120rpg.

But, it's performance was mostly superior to the Me 262.

Speed at 30 second thrust: 553mph @S/L, 562mph @20k, 525mph @36k.
Speed at normal thrust: 491mph @S/L, 521mph @20k, 475mph @36k.
Initial climb rate: 3780fpm, 1950fpm @20k, 315fpm @36k.
T/O, Landing run was 930yd and 1072yd.
Wingloading: 51lbs/sq ft.

The big killer is low endurance, only 20 minutes at sea level! That could be extended to about 1 hr at higher altitudes though.

What Juzz said, plus it had questionable stability and once disintegrated in a flyby for VIPs.

Higher performance than the Me 262, but poor endurance.  If we get jets I think it would be a lot of fun.  Me 262 vs. P-80 vs. Meteor vs. He 162 DROOL.

Which is exactly why I thought it would be a fair match up against the current planeset in AH.
Unlike the Me-262 w/4 30mm cannon, the ONLY advantage it would have is SPEED.

I dunno about you guys but, when I see the He-162 I see a definite family resemblence to the A-10 Warthog

20 minutes endurance? Hmmm... With the current fuel multiplier it would be out of fuel by the end of it's take-off run  .
