Do the later (2.2-2.4ghz) P4's all run the Northwood Core or do ya still need to look for the distinctive "A".  I was looking at a vendor that lists bunches of them, however only the 1.6 and 1.8 and 2.0 have "A" models.  The 2.2 and 2.4 do not, however they do have the 512k cache.

Anything faster than 2.0 Gig will run on the Northwood core... though the 2.4 Gig will run a 133MHz frontside bus vs the 2.2Gig's 100MHz frontside bus.  The resulting speed difference finally put Intel back on top in the performance market.

So... if you get a 2.2 GHz machine... make sure the motherboard can support the 2.4 GHz+ (133MHz) frontside bus.

I beleive the 2.4's are still 100fsb, we wont see 133fsb P4b's probably till June, with the first being 2533.

The 1.6a, 1.8a, 2.0a, 2.2, and 2.4 all have the 512k L2 cache.

Ah... I see.  For some reason I was thinking the 2.4 and 2.533 were both going to be based on the 133MHz FSB.

They were supposed to be DejaVu, but they (2.4 P4) was released still at 100 mhz fsb.  (Early IEEE news reports were that the 2.4 was supposed to be on 12" wafers as well, but that doesn't seem to have happened either.)

The "A" is only present on P4s at 2 Ghz or below to indicate the "Northwood" core is used.  If I were looking to build/buy a P4 system that would be the only way that I would go.  It's a pretty even in performance right now between the 2.4Ghz P4 and XP 2100+.  AMD holds a small edge in price, but Intel's Northwoods are good overclockers.

IMO you really can't go too wrong either way, but be aware that both companies may soon release new designs that won't work on current boards.  AMD is simply moving to a 0.13 micron process, which will require a lower core voltage.  I don't know which boards can support this, but it will definately require a bios flash on older boards that can.  Intel will be increasing the P4 FSB speed to 533 Mhz (133 Mhz QDR actually) on the next P4 release.  Again, I don't know if current boards can accept these chips either.  At the end of the year (if AMD actualy pulls it off) "hammer" will be released at tge 3400+ speed.  It is certain that current boards WILL NOT be compatible with Hammer.  (One version has 600+ pins, the other has around 900 pins.  Current Socket A boards have 462 pins.)  USB 2.0 is also starting to show up on boards, it's certainly an improvement over USB 1.1.

I'd personally wait a couple months.

As for current P4 Chipsets that support future P4b's(533fsb) the SIS 645 may be the only one, 850's, 845D's, and Via's DO NOT.

I am very happy with the Asus P4S333(SIS645). Much Info here on the SIS645 products.

Y'all do know that Intels gonna roll back prices next month don'cha? :D

I heard it from some "informed" people that there will be up to a 40% reduction in P4 prices...we'll see.

A good explination of my system in a thread below called "about time for a new box"

Anywho, im using an Asus P4S333 flashed to the Asus P4S533 BIOS(p4s51006.awd) gains with this BIOS are the 4:6(at or above 133fsb for use with DDR400) divider for the memory and apparently ATA133 support(no ATA133 drive for testing). The 41% O/C was no problem with the official p4s1005.awd BIOS for the P4S333 either. I used the Ven1 jumper on the MB for additional voltage, and touch it up with the BIOS to get 1.6v(Asus will let you goto 1.75v + the Ven1 jumper ='ing about 1.88v on a Northwood core, unlike other 645's, maybe Abit with new bios). SIS will intro the 655 chipset in the Fall(hopefully earlier) supporting Duel DDR, now thats cool

I can hit 147fsb 1.68v(2646) with my cooling solution, but back it off abit. (I think more than 1.625-50volts is getting out of hand, nothing over 10% increase)

http://www.atacom.com is taking preorders on Asus P4S533 MB's>
