Ki-67 needs Japanese torpedoes.
« on: April 14, 2002, 02:41:51 PM »
17.7" (45 cm) Type 91 (1931) Mod 3 Improved, Mod 3 Strong and Mod 4

Torpedo Type: Aircraft
Date Of Design: Improved: 1942; Strong: 1943; Mod 4: 1943
Date In Service: Improved:  1943; Strong: 1944; Mod 4: 1944
Weight: Mod 3 Improved and Strong: 1,872 lbs. (849 kg); Mod 4: 2,030 lbs. (921 kg)
Overall Length: 17 ft 3.7 in (5.275 m)
Explosive Charge: Mod 3 Improved and Strong: 529 lbs. (240 kg) Type 97; Mod 4:  679 lbs. (308 kg) Type 97
Range / Speed: Improved: 2,200 yards (2,000 m) / 41-43 knots; Strong and Mod 4: 1,640 yards (1,500 m) / 41-43 knots
Power: Kerosene-air wet-heater
Notes:  Compared to Mod 3, Mod 3 Improved had a heavier explosive charge, the top side of the afterbody and engine room strengthened with longitudinal T bars to permit 300 knot launching speed.  This was followed in 1944 by the Mod 3 Strong which had I instead of T bars for strengthening the top side of the afterbody and also the underside of the warhead nose, the air vessel was thinned with reduced pressure and range.  These modifications allowed a 350 knot launching speed.  Mod 4 was the same torpedo with a heavier explosive charge. The Mod 3 Strong and Mod 4 are the torpedoes that the Ki-67 should have available.

Both these torpedoes can be dropped at much higher speeds than the US torpedoes that the Ki-67 is using now can be.  Currently the Ki-67 has to be going 200mph or less, that is a very slow speed for the Ki-67.  The Type 91 Mod 3 Strong nad Type 91 Mod 4 had launching speeds of 300knts and 350knts respectively, far more usable than what is currently available.

Torpedoes are one of the things that the Japanese excelled in, lets get that in AH please.

Thanks.

I agree, the Japanese totally outclassed the U.S. in torpedo development.

I heard recently on the history channel why U.S. torpedos failed to detonate so often.  They had magnetic sensors in the torpedo set to detonate when the magnetic field of a ship was sensed.  However, magnetic fields are not linear around the world (this was not realised) and often the torpedos would not detonate due to this.

absolutely agree

btw its only the LW torpedo that is limited in drop speed in AH.Below 200 mph and 200foot :( i didnt know they were so poor before i played AH.

The US torpedo seems to be ok at maximum speeds in TBM. well it was last time i checked it. and almost any alt up to 1000foot i think.

The KI67 is loaded with the LW type i think as drop parimeters are the same.

definately needs changing,

Thanks Karnak. :)

Ki-67 in AH uses LW's torpedo now.
it's really not correct.

I posted about the same thing in this thread:

Also, I can send some Japanese Torpedo Info and Photos. :)

I totally agree.

If we ever get round to having other types of destroyers it would be nice to have some of the fast Japanese ones armed with the Long Lance as well.
