Satellite is bad for anything real time related to the Internet LePaul. That first hop and the return last hop is very huge in terms of latency. For downloads, it is fast. You will notice it takes a bit for the downloads to start, but once they start then the stream of data is pretty contigous which masks the initial latency (i.e. all packets are actually being delivered about 1 second later than the time they started to be sent).
If you have the choice to get ISDN, I would go that route instead of analog. Analog connections are subject to retraining while you are online. This is usually perceived as a great lag surge as during the retraining all data stops moving.
This is all dependent on the quality of the phone line, in both signal and physical categories.
ISDN does not suffer anything like that. It is consistent and more reliable than analog, if provisioned properly by the phone company.

Whether you run your own DNS or not, you do want to know the ISP you are connecting to is running thier own DNS. If an ISP cannot run DNS, then there is a good chance they will pretty much suck at running thier service as well.
This also avoids the third party guy who is reselling ISP services for others. Yep, there are people that are not ISP's that advertise themselves as ISP's but only resell services from thier home. You want to avoid them like the plague.

Same here 56k modem connects at 33.6 no problems whatsoever even across the 'pond'.

Wilbus mentioned turning connect down to 19.6?? why does this help??

I was pleasantly suprised to check on the apartment (available Thursday) and see a note from the cable company in which they are upgrading the service to be available soon

I move in this weekend, I do not have a phone line yet. So, gasp, no Internet from home (or Aces High) for a few weeks. Eeek!

Its a long sordid tale....moving out, splitting up with the girlfriend, joint custody of a dog...the whole thing is thankfully coming to a close.

I've got my cell phone, and that works better for me than a landline right now. Ex racked up a good bill on the line, so its gonna take a while to pay it off to have it transferred over. However, if cable is ready before line is, we go that route.

Sounds bad, but its more like a fresh start. Between buying a bed, microwave, security deposit, first month rent up front and next months....Im zapped financially for the month.

I'm on Mindspring, have been for 3-4 years now. I did notice the connects going south once Earthlink aquired MS but with a little proding I was able to get some different access numbers than what they publish on their website.
