Mandoble and/or Pepe...

...and or anyone else that lives in/has lived in/has been to Spain.

I'm planning a trip with some buddies to Spain for the last week of August. We want to 'experience' La Tomatina! :)
If my research is right, Valencia is the closest big city to Bunol? But there's also a major roadway from Madrid to Valencia that passes through Bunol? We're trying to decide on booking rooms in either Madrid or Valencia (Madrid has more options, Valencia is closer). We'll have a week to kill in Spain, so I wasn't sure if it would be better to stay in Madrid and make the trip to Bunol, or just stay in the Valencia area. Thought I'd try to get some opinions from people who might know better :)

Hope this helps. Buñol (don't think you'll see the n with the ~ on top) is pronounced Bugnol and it is indeed close to Valencia, and is on a highway connecting Madrid and Valencia.

On your choice of hotels, bear in mind that those on the coast will be full of tourists (they get 100% occupancy), so book in advance.

Pepe and Mandoble may persuade you to go to Madrid, but don't! :D

It's awfully hot on summer, and the mediterranean coast is a much nicer place to stay. If you have a week to spend in Spain, you can drive or take the train up to Barcelona, which is a very nice city (not because it's my city :p) with the Gaudi buildings and its gothic quartier... and it's on the coast, so you can go to the beach as well :D

If you do come, be sure to send me an e-mail, I can take you on a sightseeing tour of the coast on a Cessna 172.

BTW, bring extra clothes... those you use in the Tomatina won't be of any use after it's over :D

Madrid sucks in summer. People from Madrid flee in droves from the melting asphalt hell to wherever they can in summer.

As Cyrano said, the Med coast is nice, but book NOW or you will have to stay in not-so-nice places or even sleep in your rented van. :D

[edit]
Argh I forgot the shameless hometown propaganda :)
If you have the time and finally get to Madrid, try and come one or two days to Salamanca, prettiest city in the World and European Cultural Capital  2002. We won´t fly you around in a cessna, but we will feed you truckloads of excellent beef and pork :D
