b24-b25 Avalability onCV's
« on: April 21, 2002, 11:00:14 AM »
Just wondering, i think it would be real nice to be able to take off the B25 from the CV's like in the doolittle run :)

Cant remer if it was B25 or 24 but whatever it was i think it should be avalible, shold prove really interesting trying to get them off the deck, maybe have a bare bones loadout that takes away most of the guns.

Hack away :)

It was the B-25. That was for the Doolittle Raid. I say do it for something special. Not all the time.

with current speed of CV and no head wind for takeoff, it would be impossible to get a loaded b25 up from cv, its barely
possible for fully loaded fighter to do it now.

Sounds like a challenge ;)
I could successfully launch the B26 off the carrier offline, but only at 50% fuel and a 2000lbs bomb load.  The B26 has a high wing loading and was known for fast landings and takeoffs.  I bet a B25 (with its lower wing loading) could do it.

Dickweed Heavy Bomber Group has been practicing landing and taking off fully loaded B26s from the cv.  Landing is easier than taking off as the B26s has a high take off speed.  However, with 4X1000 pound bombs and 50% fuel I have taken off in a b26 from cv.

I got a B17 (with no bombs though) off a carrier in the H2h and can get a B26 (with bombs) off! B25 would'nt be a problem :D

if all were modelled correctly it would be a b-25b no tail gun or waist gunners just top turret and nose blisters and 2k bombs with max fuel

B25's are available from cv's in wb so I'm sure they would be here too .  Heavy b25's didn't take off from cv's in real life either .

Weren't the ones in the Doolittle raid pretty much stripped of everything that had nothing to do with keeping the plane in the air and carrying the bombs?  I mean they had to get those things off the ground in about 460 feet, if memory serves.

I just saw a show on doolittle raid last night, if i remember correctly it was 500 feet and they got them off in 400 (except 1 who forgot to lower his flaps and almost crashed).

And many of us have gotten fully loaded b26 on/off a carrier, (BTW they didnt have tail gunners but they made fake tail  gunners out of broom sticks to scare the japs, dunno if it worked though).

Maybe we can get some of the USN / USMC versions of the Mitchell, the PBJ.

I got a pic somewhere of one landing on a CV with the tail hook down.  :)

On Thursday April 18th ( the 60th anniversary of the real Doolittle raid), the Dickweed Heavy Bomber group landed a large group of B-26s on a CV, then took off to hit and successfully take an enemy field.  It was an amazing sight to see.  It was also a great way to refine flying skills.  All in all it took about a month of practice take offs and landings to enable the whole squad to participate.  I'm not sure but I bet someone from DHBG has it on film if anyone's interested.
