Troops in AH?
Just pondering AH this morning, and I thought of something that might make the game more interesting, and should be (Like I would know ) easy to implement.

People often complain about the ease of base capture.

Would it be feasible to add enemy troops at towns and fields?

They would act just like Paratoopers, only be AI controlled, and their one mission would be to kill enemy paratroopers entering the town.

The two sets of AI troopers could shoot it out, and therby requiring at least 2 goons to take a town. Base on random selections, the shootout would go either way, with both sides fighting it out until one is destroyed. If the invading force has any troops left, they then enter the map room, (Requiring the full 10 troops to take the field, thereby, most likely, requiring multiple goon drops.)

Also, the defending field would have the ability to drop defensive troops from goons or LVTS to beef up the defence of the of the town.

Of course, these troops would be vulnerable to straffing, bombing, GV's and shipboard bombardment.

If you really want to get crazy, allow some of the defending troops to carry anti-tank weapons.

Sounds like fun to me. I'll leave it to you guys to find all the holes in this idea

I think being able to control ur troops would be cool... Drop ur drops... eject outa the goon and when you touch ground the troops with run to you and follow u. But i do like enemy troops... would be cool to drop bombs on them:)

Screw the AI.  Have "mannable" troops (as it were)......

I would much prefer mannable troops, but I think until such time, it would be much easier to simply impliment the AI troops.

Seems like a simple addition.

Or make it so when you bail out of a plane you can use your gun, of course it'd only be like 30 cal rifle at best that fired a shot like every 3-5 secs but would be cool to be able to shoot at the guy who shot u down while your floating down!!

Absolutely, AH could succeed where WWIIonline fell apart.  (i think they fell apart, haven't played recently)  I've often thought that it would be real cool to be running through one of the bases or towns when they're under attack.

I seem to recall a message once saying that HTC wasn't real interested in going in that direction but I hope they change their minds.

I seem to recall an interview where Pyro stated (long term plan for HTC) that the base capture would be fought with “mannable” troops in underground bunkers.

I believe the interview was with Dogfighter web site. (I think that Dogfighter was part of Playnet) Heck, that was over a year ago. I could be way off base. Anyone else remember that interview?

I remember something like this being written. I don't think it would need to be this complicated to start. Like I said, I'd vbe happy having a birdeye view of an AI troop shoot out.

Maybe get that new a-20 we're getting, and bring in a Close Air Strike to support our troops.  MMmmmmmm...Strafing.....

And it would make base capture that much more difficult.

Hell, the code is in place to walk around when you bail out, how much harder could it be to make it so you can shoot, and use your own man to capture a base...with 9 others of course.

Still, I would be happy with the AI troops for now.

Pyro....Comment?

Actually, the interview you refer to was in "The Wargamer", at http://www.wargamer.com. , and was with HiTech. Check the archieves section if you want to read the full text.  It was done at the con last year, by a very close aquaintance ;).

The gist of it was that the map room would be expanded to a multi-level headquarters bunker.  Instead of dropping AI troops, the goon/LVT/M2 would drop a spawn point near the bunker, a spawn point to allow players to jump into first-person-shooter mode and storm the bunker.  Inside the bunker would be a spawn point for the side that owns the airfield.  Players would then fight it out with small arms, grenades, flamethrowers, etc.  HiTech didn't elaborate on how the capture would be made, but I would expect there would be some way to disable the bunker spawn point and some objective to reach, such as in WWIIOL (a radio room).

Some other nice teasers in that piece, btw.  Just wish I (er...I mean the interviewer) could have got HiTech to commit to adding the P-40 to the game:).

Yeah, I had kind of imagined the implementation as being more or the less the Doom/Quake/Castle Wolfenstein engine.  My uneducated and uninformed guess would be that "spawning" to the bunker would actually be a "zone" to another server running an off the shelf first person shooter.

Man that would be fun.

am i right in tghinking this game is called aces HIGH..all troops will do is slow the game down...i mean what would they do...shoot .303 ammo at sheep?

im not a programmer but im sure it would not be easy. if a troop enters the map room wont the interior have to be mapped? also try this up a plane and fly 10 second from base and bail..see how long it takes you to walk back to base...:)

Sure the game is called Aces High, but we have tanks, and ships.
And I think this is what sets this game apart from the likes of other combat flight sims.

I don't want to speak for Hi-tech but I can tell from his interview that he sees this as more than an Air-Combat simulator.

I think he want's AH to be like what WWIIOL aspired to be. A totally immersive combat simulation.

As for walking around forever, think about the amount of time we spend (Well, I do anyway) driving GV's up inclines, or LVTs at 8 kts trying to  take a base.

Patience is not a problem for me.
