Doolittle raid!!!
« on: April 22, 2002, 01:09:49 PM »
in relation to obear's post about the b25 on the cv:

Just this past April 18th was the 60th aniversary of the incredible Doolittle raid from a carrier to tokyo.

The DHBG, on the suggestion of one of our many skilled squad members (sorry i forget his exact handle,) decided to recreate, to the best of AH and our ability, the historic doolittle raid.

Of course the task of landing and taking a loaded B26 off a steaming carrier is no easy task, so over two weeks of practice took place in both the TA and the MA.

As the eve of the 18th approached, the highly skilled members of the DHBG were ready (or as ready as we would ever be)

Im leaving alot of the story out here, and im sure the rest of the squad will respond with there own personal stories of the event.

A contigent of the b26 raid on the deck (notice bombers on the bow of the CV to leave the fantail clear for arriving bombers.):

The mighty Dickweeds on route to target in formation:

Some of the bombers who made it down to a land based airfield lined up for a group photo:

This was by far those most interesting and exciting mission that i have been a part of as a proud member of the DHBG.

All in all an absolute success, with the enemy field being completley destroyed by over a dozen Dickweed B26s.

...note... this raid was made by b26s with 50% fuel and full bomb loadout. Several DHBG officers made takeoffs in practice with 75% fuel and full bombs...

Awesome loser!  (<-- sounds kinda funny)
Send me an email at jarbo9@iname.com if the DHBG wants to do more historical re-enactments.   I am sure the Buccaneers would be glad to participate in whatever role is needed.  I have a cool historic mission "in-the-bag" for 2 squads to do.  Just let me know if your interested.

I remember doing something similar on  a Snapshot hosted bt Duckwing, was great fun :D (we did cheat a bit & set a 50mph headwind though... but we didn't train beforehand).
