Is it possible to stage an amphibious invasion using the carrier group?

Yes, you can launch LVT4's to knock down the city and send a LVT 2 to capture.

Problem is by the time you get close enough to launch & make it there in one day the enemy has discovered the CV. Ussually ends up with a low level furball right over the lvt's.

The ideal situation would be to not be detected until your cv group is close to the base.  Then you can launch attack aircraft (I like the F6F for this) to take out hangars (vh first and shore batteries if present) and cap the base and take out the town.  Launch LVT's and take the base.  If you can achieve air superiority over the base its a piece of cake.  If not, there's a good chance you'll lose the CV.

If the CV is detected a ways off, and there is an active defense, they'll get your fighters in furballs over the water before you can hit the base.  Best suggestion there is to have bombers make an end run from a land base to take out their FH's.  (Obviosly that requires alot of organization, which can be hard to do in the MA.)

So, maybe the best time to do an amphibious assault would be to sail at night and launch before sunrise, hit the bases at first light, and use the rest of the day to secure the base and get the carrier group out of Dodge as fast as possible?  Or would the ships be detected, even at night?

Maybe use land-based bombers in the first wave to loosen up the base defenses, maybe some heavy P-47s and such to take out the flak and let the land-based heavies do the buildings, then the CV group would be responsible for securing the base?  I assume that there would be no shortage of fighters for dogfighting, and that the real trick would be finding folks to do the heavy work.

if you attack with land based planes you will tip off the enemy, and if you use land based planes you might as well send along some C47's

the night attack might have merit, but any sneak attack will have to be well organized ,planes will have to stay on deck until attack is under way, as soon as planes lift off the CV enemy will be tiped off.   it might work in a scenero but i think it needs too much discipline to work in the MA
