Remember Lorena Bobbit?

I don't know how to spell this woman's name, but anyway I found something like this image in a book called "Coral Seas" while waiting at the Dentists Office. This is a Bobbit Worm, known to attack night divers in Indonesia, the Solomon's, and like places.

How big is it? Is it hostile? what does it feed on?

Up to 9 feet long.  Search google for more info.

Hmm, somehow my followup post didn't make it through.

I read that it is supposed to reach up to nine METERS in length (might have been a misprint), and that they DO attack divers. Their mouths are supposed to span as much as three times their span.

My girlfriend and I are planning a vacation to fly from California to Hawaii, Guam, the Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and finally Australia. She likes to snorkel, so I've been checking out the possibilities. From what I've found I'm going to be avoiding the night swims. In fact, I'm leaning toward England and a visit all of the Air Museums.

Animal, this thing is supposed to be extremely elusive, but I'm intending to take a camera anyway (to get shots for screen savers, etc). Hopefully, this camera won't get lost by the Airlines like the last one.

Not unusual for a worm to be aggresive. I was with an invertebrate study group out on the mud flats near Morro Bay, California when the professor found this long (18") pink polychaete worm. He picked the thing up and was explaining how these things had a sharp beak like mouth when...WHAM...this beak came out looking like the beast from Alien and takes a 1/2" square chunk out of the meat below his thumb.

Great learning experience .
