About codecs...

I'm sure all of ye have bumped into this ANNOYANCE at some point.

You download an avi or mpeg or any kind of video file... when you run it the damn thing says it cant find the codec to play it with.

On some it gives a codec error and plays the video without sound. On some it plays the sound but no video. On others it just doesnt play at all.

WTF? Those videos were obviously made by someone and worked (works?) on other people's systems.. why not mine? Death to Microsoft and all that sort of thing.. *grrr*

Anyone know a URL where you can DL those codecs OR know of a video player that doesnt have this problem?

Its REALLY annying to try to DL WW2 films and guncams to make a cool AH video and have this gdamn issues pop up every time.

Microsoft doesn't make the codecs Tac.. no need to get pissed at them.

One common codec is the DivX codec.  It can be found at http://www.divx.com.

http://www.codecs.com is a good site, too.

When you output your own movie, think happy thoughts about using a standard codec... there are some great codecs out there, but not everyone has them (as you posted). The more common codecs for Windows (off the top of my head) are RLE, Cinepak, Indeo, BMP.

Its a way to compress video.  Basically.. there are different "codes" to compress the video in different fassions.  Some are more clear... others compress more... whatever.

An uncompressed AVI of 30 seconds of AHFilm would be around 5gig... you can compress it to be about 1 meg.  The original 5gig file doesn't loose too much quality.  A compressed AVI is sometimes best viewed on a 3" schreen.

I think codec gets it's name from code decode.
