<SALUTE> To a Fallen teammate and Hero
« on: April 26, 2002, 06:40:57 PM »
On the morning of 25 April, 2002 the 1st Raider Battalion lost one of our own. Larry "Scrappy" Holst passed away after a very sudden illness. After 18 years of service to his country in the United States Navy he leaves behind a wife and young son, and one hell of a void that will never be filled. Scrappy was one of the founders of the team and had been with us for more than five years. May God keep you close Scrap, until we meet again.

Scrappy flew in Aces High with me (Slamma, or rdrSLAM currently), Spook, Thorr, RUQWICK, Pappy, Drifter, Missile and others about one and a half years ago. He and the founding members of the team flew in Air Warrior before that. Some of the old timers may remember the team and Scrappy specifically.

I am proposing a flyby and missing man formation in honor of Scrappy tomorrow at 11 AM EDT tomorrow over a Knight base to be announced depending on the map situation. Any and all, including Bishops and Rooks are welcome. Obviously, we would need to suspend the war for a couple minutes while we did this, but those who are willing to participate will probably do so willingly. I will announce location and time on global channel before 11AM EDT.

Tonight, I raise my glass to Scrap in ~SALUTE~!

 I'll do the same.

I didn't know him but he was a fellow virtual pilot and human being.

I don't know Larry, but my sincere condolences.  He sounds like a great guy to have known.

Gone From My Sight

Scrappy...... fair winds and clear skies

Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says;

"There, she is gone!"

"Gone where?"

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says;

"There, she is gone!"

There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout;

"Here she comes!"

And that is dying.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

to a departed Soldier. He risked all for those he never met and those who didn't care. He'll have much company in Fiddlers Green.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."
