May 10th - It begins..
« on: April 29, 2002, 09:11:37 AM »
Heard on the news this morning, May 10th the first family will have these chips  implanted under their skin. It's a stripped down version of Digital Angel - it does not have GPS active, only medical info. Looking for article about the family and their decision to go ahead with the procedure, will post when I find it. It had to do with the dad's medical condition. Suppose to simplify his treatments or something..
Here is the parent company: Applied Digital Solutions

Another tidbit:

Give it 5 years and see where it's at and who controls it and it's info ....

And you think you are paraniod now :)

I have a Nephew who is very sick. He has cystic fibrosis, and has many allergies. His life is one hostpital trip after another. While I do not fully understand the utility of these chips, I do look forward to anything that can help him survive another year because I don't get to see him often enough.

Yes, theres a "one world conspiracy theorist" in my workplace who tried to get me wound up about this. But there's a long jump between voluntary use of a medical implant, and manditory issuance of a monitoring device. God help me, I'm going to use an analogy here: Just because abortions are legal doesn't mean that you can't have kids. We have the technology to limit population in a brutal and authoritarian way. But we don't. In the same sense, I do not believe that we will all be chipped any time soon, if at all.

But then, I use my credit cards all the time without fear the Government is going to use my consumer info against me. And I use my library card too. I have no priavacy filters on my Internet access either. But then again, my wife used to work for the NSA, and now she's a contractor for the CIA so I guess my life is forfeit either way lol.

We have some clients that are terrified of being kidnapped - or members of their families being kidnapped.

I think a little chip with GPS capability imbedded in their (or their families') skin would be just the ticket for them!  You could track down the kidnappers in a "jiffy"...or at a minimum find a body so that you aren't wondering if a relative is alive for the rest of their life.

Also, wouldn't it be useful to get one attached to some of the Taliban dudes lounging in Cuba (without their knowledge), then let them go and see where they go?  Once they get back into one of their training camps simply download the GPS data into a Tomahawk and "kaboom"!

here's the family's story:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,49303,00.html

"Jacobs, his wife, Leslie, and their 14-year-old son, Derek, could become the nation's first family to be fitted with the device, called VeriChip. It is awaiting approval from the Food and Drug Administration. "

"The chip is expected to cost around $200 and the scanner between $1,000 and $3,000. Applied Digital plans to give away chip readers to hospitals and ambulance companies in hopes they will become standard equipment.

The timing of a decision from the FDA is unclear, but approval is probably several months away at the earliest. "

How about less than 3 weeks?

FWIW... I've lived through about 5 'Ends of the World'

we all know about Y2k...
and 1981...
and the year the planets all lined up...
before all that it was the onset of 'apocolypse' type weather heralding the second coming...
or some that believed that SSN's were the mark of the beast....

Hmmm...

I find this quite disturbing.  The medical appication is a valid point... but if you don't see the potential of this device......
