What was your best flight tonight?
« on: May 02, 2002, 09:05:23 PM »
So many freaking negative threads, thought I would start a fun one.  I just landed my best AH sortie, earning 15.27 perks in a 109F sortie.

Huge milestone for me personally.  I know you old guys have much better, Fariz probably gets that many in first 30 seconds...  But lets hear about your best flight tonight.

Flew the Mindy map in a D model pony. Never got above 10k, mostly in valleys below 5k. Landed the sortie with 7 scalps and about 25% ammo left.

Was pretty good for an old guy like me. :)

Took a C.205 over near an enemy base.  Got jumped by 3 co-alt or slightly lower enemy fighters, a BF-109, a P-51D, and a Hellcat.  After a grueling 5 minute duel which mainly consisted of me manouvering fiercely trying to keep the 3 of them from shooting me down, the fight finally ended up near the deck.  I began a series of hi-g maneuvers with what was left of my energy, as close to the mountainside as I could get, hoping that one or more of them would auger.  That is exactly what soon happened, with the Hellcat carrying a little bit too much speed through the bottom of a loop, and smacking into the ground right in front of me.  Now it was two on one.

Tracers were smoking past me and I was still having the fight of my life with the Mustang doing hi speed runs through the fight and climbing away, and the 109 trying to turn with me.  The 109 soon lost control trying to shake me off his tail at about 100 feet AGL and spun in.  Two maneuver kills so far and the P-51 was still after me.

I turned to fight the Mustang but just then a friendly plane made a run through the fight and shot the P-51, damaging him slightly.  The Mustang turned and ran for home.  I gave chase, although I knew that I was almost certain to be outrun.  The friendly plane must have been a Mustang or La-7 or something, because he caught the enemy Mustang, and he turned to fight.  The friendly plane was either shot down or damaged enough that he returned home, however, because I lost sight of him and soon it was just me and the enemy P-51 again.  He was trailing dark smoke, so I knew it was just a matter of time.  After a brief fight, during which I put some lead in him his engine must have quit because he rolled out and started a slow descent.  At this point I had 2 kills, but had hardly fired a shot, so rather than let him ditch I put a good long burst into his plane (sorry bout that ole chap, couldnt help myself).

At this point my fuel state was low, so I started home.  I spotted a PT just off my home field, but was reluctant to engage, since I have had bad experiences against PT boats in the past.  Just about that time, another friendly plane made a dive on the PT, and got shot down for his pains.  Seizing the opportunity to make a pass on him while he was looking towards the smoking wreck of my countryman, I rolled in and popped him.  3 fighter kills and a PT boat so far.  I landed, and rearmed on the pad.

Taking off again I headed to a nearby field that we were trying to capture.  Myself and two other fighters were capping the town which was destroyed and waiting for the goon.  We couldnt do a proper job vulching because the ack was up and none of us wanted to risk going in and deacking the field.  Some brave rook soul began repeatedly upping in a N1k1.  My compadres shot him down twice, with me getting an assist one of those times, and I also shot him down.  Something happened to the goon and he was unable to capture the field.  Soon there were about five enemy fighters up.  I was running low on fuel and outnumbered, so I started for home.

A La-7 and a Spitfire caught up to me and after a brief fight, I was unable to evade a hi-speed pass by the La-7 and he knocked a wing off.  I smoked him up good and proper first though.  Final tally, 4 fighter kills and 1 assist, + the PT kill.  Very good perks too since it was in a C.205.  I think I got around a dozen perks for that mission and I didnt even get perks for the 2 maneuver kills of course.  And thus ended my first day of tour 28.

I did that in AW once, tho not on purpose, my screen froze on the (f3?) view, the one where you see your instruments and the map only.

Was pretty cool, still had complete control of the aircraft but had to land watching the little icon in relation to the zoomed in runway while maintaining my pitch angle and speed.  I actually landed it.  Very disorienting.

I ran from the computer and related this amazing feat to my girlfriend in great detail who alternated between  the blank stare and the "Im concerned for the possible future I have with this man" look...

WOMEN!  They just dont understand...

My best flight was NOT when a lucky hit from a B-17 took off my wingtip at D1.7.

I was in a 190 coming in from his hi 4, manuvering to throw off his aim when BAM, wingtip gone. As I struggled to regain control over the aircraft, he hit me again as I whizzed past the B-17, this time taking off my entire right wing.

After that, the skilled and talented gentleman flying the B-17 rapidly proceeded to mock me on ch1 "hahahaha you dweeb, I took your wing off, you talentless moron hahaha" or something like that.

After that I flew a C-47 to calm myself down...I do like those totally eventless 30 min rides.
