spitfire -C versions
« on: May 06, 2002, 01:14:40 PM »
B and C and D and so on were designations for armament in British planes.
B is cannons and machine guns, C is 4 20mm cannons(as in Hurricane IIC)
I know there were C armed Spitfire of all the major versions of the plane, and in signifiant numbers.
So can we please have Spits armed with 4 cannons?
I'd be a very realistic choice.

DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

There were Spitfires with 4 cannon, but I think the first time they started showing up in 'significant' numbers was with the Spit 21.

Perhaps Karnak knows more on this, I was under the impression that the 4 cannon birds were more 'one-offs' than production runs.

C and E wing Spits had a place to put the 3rd & 4th cannons, but I've never seen a photo of one in the field with this loadout.

The only production Spit that fought in WWII with 4 cannons was the Spitfire 21 as far as I know.

According to Pierre Clostermann the Spit Vc (4x20mm) was considered a failure. And the series was not qualified to use by the RAF. Most of the planes were sent to Malta...

I agree.  It's too hard to get kills in the AH Spitfire - give it better guns

The "C" refered to the universal wing that could accomodate either 8 x .303, 4 x 20 mm, or 2 x 20mm and 4 x .303.  The 4 x 20 mm was certainly less commonly used but was not that rare. I have a bunch of pics of them.  Here's a few:

A Squadron of 4 cannon Spits (No. 2 SAAF)

A boatload of 4 cannon Spits for Malta

A 4 cannon Spit VIII of No 56 Sqdn.

Performance trials for 4 cannon Spit V

4 cannon spits most certainly were "qualified to use by the RAF".  They didn't give up much in performance either as evidenced by the above report.  The 109 suffered far worse from their additional 20 mm in gondolas.

We all know this'll never happen, although it would give people somehting new to whine about........:D

spit V's and seafires with 4*20mm would be nice seeing as other a/c have their alternative loadouts modelled.

When that one debuts, I certainly want both the BBS and CH1 in the MA to be archived. It will be classic. :)

Anyone know the ammo loadout on the 4x20?

Of course, since it only takes one ping at 1000 yards you could potentially get hundreds of kills right?  :D
