The impossible dilemma (Flossy? YANKEE? help???)
« on: May 06, 2002, 10:13:12 PM »
I'm trying to convince my fiancée to try out Aces High (figure if she starts playing then it might avoid some problems in the future  )  However, she's worried about being no good and also about being one of a very small minority of females in the community.  (suppose she's worried about getting harassed?)

I know I can teach her how to fly, but does anybody have a suggestion about the second problem?  Should I just give up?

"Quid Pro Quo" Preon1.  Take her shopping for 2 hours if she will learn to fly with you online for 2 hours :).

Of course, this has never worked for me!

Tell her that if she doesnt try it you will be late for the wedding, probably cheating with her best friend.

She may just dump you instead of playing, but at least you wont be a fool by tieing the knot.

-edit-
you may also add that you will be an abusive husband if she is not interested in your hobbies.

Do like animal does. Be rude, act drunk, and we will never know you're a woman.

These suggestions aren't really helping.  Stuff like this would more than likely just find me on the couch.

Maybe just let her WATCH the text buffer for an hour or two. In an hour, she'll she many whines, idiots being...well...idiots (me), and much good natured humor.

What will be DOUBTFUL she sees his cruel-natured jokes and harrasment. If she does, it was a terrible night.

Sounds like she is already reasonably interested in AH, which is a good start!  If she is worried about her performance, why not start off by showing her the mannable field/ship ack guns?  That way she can concentrate on having fun trying to shoot down the enemies without having to think about flying or driving.  Once she has a few kills in those, maybe move on to gunning in a bomber, followed by taking vehicles and PT boats and finally aircraft, as her confidence and skills improve.  Main thing is to be sure she has fun and a chance of some success - hopefully as she starts seeing results she will want to do more!  :)

As for harrassment.... well I can honestly say that in my almost 4 years of flying, firstly in AW and more recently here, I have never had any kind of harrassment - everyone has always been extremely friendly.... as long as she is not easily offended by some of the conversations going on all around....  :)  I usually find that even though I have what I think is a fairly obvious female GameID, most people who don't know me persume I am male anyway, and may only realise I am female after hearing me on vox.  There may not be many of us female players in AH yet, but I am sure that will continue to change, especially as more former AW female pilots find their way here.

No, do not give up.... as long as she shows some kind of interest, keep pushing and encouraging her; explain as much as you can about everything going on around - the map, radio channels, squads, etc.  The more she understands, the more she will want to play and improve her skills!  Good Luck!  ;)

Wait until you are married to make this important decision.

You may find that you don't want really want to add, "Didn't I tell you to kill the acks?!?"....to, "You forgot to refill the toilet paper again!".

I recommend that you plan a wedding ceremony in the Main Arena. You and your beloved can ride in an open M-16 down a runway with attendees parked on both sides for the entire length of the runway. It would be beautiful, and would bind her to Aces High, whether she flys or not. I'm sure we would all be willing to help you out with that ... :D

Preon, I hope you don't mind. I don't have time to type my own question so I just edited yours for my own  problem.

Thanks...

The RATS have had Sweetie, Dawn, Bambi and Lalust flying in the squad off and on now for years. This may be an "old boys" club, but there are still enough women flying to keep a few of us civilized :)

It took me 3 years to convince Lalust to fly with us (my better half)
I believe that she will enjoy the game as long as you show an intrest in her progress as a pilot. It may sound sexist, but I am pretty sure she will (starting out at least) be flying for you, not her.

oh yea, squelch 1 so she dosnt have to listen to the word wars.
Lalust has mentioned that she never knew men could squeak so much before hehe.
