I broke the sound barrier in the arado last night. I died though. I went up to 30,000 feet, then put it straight down. At about 400mph I fired up the RATO units. Of course, my wings ripped of shortly after, and I became a flying hot dog, but oddly, the RATO units continued to work on my acceleration. Even though they are attached to the wings, the wings went but the RATO units stayed. Oh well. Anyhow, I took a screenshot that I can post here later of the inside, note the spedometer pegged back to zero. I must have been doing close to 850mph at about sea level. Actual altitude will be in the screenshot as well.
I don't consider it official since I died, but I will set wind at 127mph in a terrain next, and try to do it officially.
Has anyone else tried to do break the sound barrier? Am I the only one who plays around like this (understand that I did this in offline play).

Did it in a TA152 in a dive chasing a AR234, then I hit the 'sonic drag layer' and promptly slowed down and regained control.

You broke the sound barrier? Um... breaking up don't count, I don't think. AH can't really model this realistically with it's current damage model. No plane prior to the XP-86 was capable of breaking the sound barrier. Not the Lightning, T-bolt, 262, 152, not the P-80 or even the MiG-15. The transonic barrier should rip your plane apart.

If it is possible to break the barrier in AH, well... it isn't a big issue anyway, methinks. Guess that was for nothing

Yes, i know that it doesn't really count. But it's fun to try. Also, the arado is fun to take off from a carrier...
I know nothing in RL could do it at this time period, but it would be neat if HTC still had a "sound barrier" modelled, where if, for some crazy reason, something WERE to exceed the sound barrier, you would see shock waves, maybe your engine noise would disappear, whatever.

It IS modelled. That's what the terms "transonic drag" and "compressibility buffet" mean!

Ispar - I was under the impression that typhoon pilots often broke the sound barrier when in ground attack.

I don't think any survived though.

Even though they rip appart, it would be really cool to hear the "boom" in the arena if somebody blows through the sound barrier... wether they have wings or not.

Now can we boom the windows out of the tower?

The sound barrier was purported to have been broken on several occasions during wwii by fiters in dives, unfortunately it is believed that none of the pilots survived.
