LA7speed v's p51
« on: May 10, 2002, 12:58:28 PM »
La7 w/ 25% fuel at 10k dives to 4k at bottom of dive indicated
speed is 475-500. In process of dive P51D does a slight turn
from around 8k and picks up 6 of the La7 at around 6.0 back.
La7 levels out and indicated speed stays around 450-475.
P51D moves from beyond 6.0 up to 2.5 and continues to close
La7 moves from 4k to 3k and stays close to 475 indicated speed
P51D proceedes to catch up to La7 and shoot it down...

Does this sound like a normal fight? I was under an assumption
that the La7 could outrun a P51D .....

In tailchase on the deck the la7 eats pony's.

But, if the pony had speed coming into the fight, he might well have been able to dive & then hang with you.

I wouldn't expect it to happen often, but thats the only explaination I can think of.

First of all it happened so there is not much point in trying to figure out if was possible.  Figure out how it happened.  The P-51 has more weight and less drag than the La-7 so it should accelerate better in a dive.  Furthermore the high weight/low drag should mean that it holds speed better than the La in level flight so after you both leveled the 51 probably did not decelerate as fast.  Also the 51 may have unloaded during the dive which would have helped him considerably, particularly if you did not unload.  If you have film, I believe you can get into his aircraft and watch the gages to see what is happening on his end.  And as Ghosth points out, you don't know the 51's initial E state, he might have had considerably more smash than you to begin with, although Co-E I would expect him to close the distance a lot in the scenario you describe.

Assuming I am a pursuing and in the LA7 or the Pony {doesn't matter which}, I WILL catch the other plane.

The whole key to pursuit like that is being a better "E" flyer than the other guy.  & if he is trying to see you on his six, he is robbing himself of "E".  Also, he dives I follow in a very shallow dive, he pulls away early but now lacks sustained "E"... I catch up, he breaks into me and do a High, Lazy Immleman.... Is game over, unless he is really good or I screw up majorly.

I love to see other pilots dive steeply away for seperation when I am in any type of B-N-Z plane... He better have friendlies close or he is a kill decal...

Hope this helps...

can u watch the gauges in another aircraft? i know the only gauges that work in my replays are in my aircraft the others are static all set to "engine off" positions. another thing is when watching someone elses replay the gauges aren't smooth they stick every second maybe less so they are pretty much useless.

Kaz:

Use the stand alone AH film viewer.  It gives you digital readouts of air speeds and altitudes.

Real problem here was running from the stang...at 6.0 you should of been pulling into a zoom climb and reversing into him. The La-7 will out accelerate and outclimb a pony down low in addition to having a higher top end speed. I've always felt you should turn and engage a single enemy under the situation you describe. Better to engage via a merge...even if your negative E instead of ending  up in a purely defensive set of evasives. You'll get a better feel for your bogies E state and skill level on the merge and make better choices. Down low you should of had a reasonable chance against a single pony.
