I have a gameplay enhancement idea that I think would add a unique aspect to night flying:
Pathfinders w/ flares!
Think about it, certain planes like the Mosquito could be equipped with historically accurate flare loads (like the christmas tree flares) that they would drop to illuminate targets for other bombers at night.
These illumination flares could also make it possible to rationalize totally turning off icons at night for cons because illumination would highlight aircraft in the air just as it would show targets on the ground.
A related enhancement could be the addition of spotlights at fields under attack.
