Fake the HO, then extend for position...I suck on HO's, but pride myself for sucking at them.

I either barrel roll over or nose down under it.

roll slightly to make it a deflection shot and then wait for enemy reaction.

If the enemy turns towards me, I turn inside and deny as much of a shot as possible.  They usually miss.  I'll extend if the enemy has more e or use verticle moves if he has less.

If the enemy does not bring his nose to bear on me, I start to climb while looking over my shoulder to see what the enemy is doing.  If he's climbing too.. I usually just extend.

If the enemy breaks too soon... I turn into him and shoot the crap out of him.

at 1.2 out, pull both triggers and pray
if i see multiple flashes, I then try to roll away
if I hear multiple pings, I usually am picking a new runway 2 seconds later

Nose down to avoid, if there's time.  If not, fire all guns and try to make him pay for it.

Point my plane (left or right) off their nose and when they are within 900 yds I pull just a little(on the stick) towards their aircraft and at about 400yds I begin to pull really hard back on the stick and into a loop. Then I decide where I should take them from there.

...Nose under the oncoming HOdweeb and  extend high, then evaluate current SA and decide whether the dweeb is worth killing.

note: This tactic only against those who I consider true HO "Dweebs" ie: The ones who's first and only thought is a HO.  It's really frustrating to fly 5 or 10 minutes, anxiously waiting for a heart-pounding fite just to have some dipweed end it all with a cheap shot, and even worse getting suckered into it. My own "newness" got me in that situation many times until recently. The above tactic works wonders to turn the tables..there is nothing more gratifying.

If somewhere near close to corner speed or above,

2.2K or so a slight turn away to the right, slightly nose low.

About 1.5K as he rolls to put you on nose again, a easy gentle reversal into him, still slightly nose low.

About 1.0, a hard pitch up, leading into a left wingover, with a bit of rudder to come around on him.

Done right, I almost never take a ping and sometimes get a nice position.

Now, much below cornerspeed and it's just a H2H joust. If you can't maneuver, you might as well shoot back.

For me, it depends almost totally on what I'm flying and what the nme is flying.  If I'm in my favorite ride, the DHog, I won't go HO with ANY plane that has 4-20mm cannons (N1K, CHog, Typhoon or the P47 with 8-50 and that's true no matter WHAT I'm flying) or most airplanes with cannons in the nose of the a/c with zero convergence (109).

I'll take my chances with a Hellcat, Mustang, Spit, Zero or most other planes because I know the Hog is built like a brick and can take some pings.

That said, if it's a better angles plane I'll maybe take a snapshot based on the criteria above (a N1K no, a Spit yes) and then extend nose down and climb to back to altitude.  If I have the better turning airplane (vs. P47, Typhoon) I'll again think about the snapshot HO and then pull up in a gentle arc looking back to see what the nme's doing or pull up into an immelman to retain my 'e' (depending on my speed).  If he's turning into me I'll continue the turn and bring guns to bear sooner and engage a turning fight  :-o

Shoot first.  .50's outrange the 20mm    for the most part.

LOL.

I set up nose low, diving slightly to the merge at 0G.  At about D1.5 I'll level a bit and roll a bit to one side under his nose to make him miss.  I turn that roll into a pull up, likely a hard one, but it depends on the relative energy states, and do this at about 500 yards.  At this point, if he's tried to shoot me, he is going to overshoot below me as I lead-turn him vertically.  Advantage Jug.

The only time I'll take an HO is when I either have not enough speed to do anything else, or some goofball decides to try a HO shot in a Zeke versus my Jug, in which case I'll blast him and fly through the explosion.    If I'm really fast and can't turn too well, I may take it too from long range.
