I have had more than a few hard luck sorties, however the one I had last night is fresh in my memory.
I launch a SpitXIV off of a CV (yeah, it was activated there), I fly to A45. I meet an La-7 co-alt around 12k, close to co-E as well. After the merge we go at it one on one, with the La-7 losing to the monster Spit (really no contest, the Mk.XIV has it all over the La-7 at that height).
As I pull off the fatally hit Lavochkin, a battered N1K2 zooms up in front of me, barely 500 yards ahead. I finish it for the assist.
Spotting a lanc headed for our CV, about 2k above me, so I hit WEP and climb, angling for a shot from his 9 O'clock. Just after I open fire, the Lanc takes a 5" hit and explodes. Another assist.
I then spot a SpitIX about 2k below heading for the low furball. So, I roll in on his 6, racing in at 460 mph, I close to 300 yards and blast off his elevators. With that, the Spit pitches up right in front of me. At 460 mph, just a few yards behind, there's nothing I can do to avoid the wreckage. My aircraft is too badly damaged to fly, but I stay with it long enough to get the kill credit. However, 58+ perks are down the drain... Such is life.
My regards,
Widewing
