Your worst luck sortie?
« on: May 16, 2002, 12:58:16 AM »
The other night I had the worst luck ever in a single flight. I was in a 205 and spotted a low and slow Pony (probably still in auto-climb mode). At the time there were no other cons in the region, so I started my attack run by flying over him and split-s'ing on to his 6. I had some great shots, which all missed, but I was feeling pretty confident that the pony was going down sooner or later because I still had a great E advantage. Just then a 262 shows up... and I spend the next few minutes dodging the 262 while trying to simutaniously attack the pony. I thought it might make a good film, so I started recording. I concentrated on the pony, but it didn't really matter because I couldn't hit the broad side of a planet, much less a small manuvering P51. Then a Spitfire shows up, pony goes into 'extend' mode, and I decide it might be a good idea to RTB. My plan was to stay fast enough to lose the Spitfire while dodging the 262 and heading towards the closest base.

The 262 makes a very slow (for a 262) attack from my 6, zooms up in front of me, and I finally have a shot! JUST THEN I hear over the range voice com someone with a thick southern drawl say, "can I git a radio check please?" followed by several hundred thousand .50 cal hits on my plane.

I immediately check my 6... the P-51 is way off, low, and heading in another direction. The spitfire is still a good 3k or so away. I briefly look all in all directions. Nothing! My focus then returned to the 262 who was no longer in sight. I checked my 6 again and found him about 300 yards off and closing. I tried in vain to turn. One hit was all it took and I ate the mountain.

Once back at the tower, I decided to check out the film viewer and find out what the mystery plane was.

While watching the film (which surprisingly saved the voice communication) I realized that the person who sent the 'radio check' was vulched and the hit sounds from his speakers were picked up by his microphone and sent to me... which made me think I was getting hit... which made me look around... which led to my untimely demise.

Pretty unlucky huh? It's sort of like getting hit by a truck. You have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was sending a voice com at the EXACT moment he was getting shot and I happened to be in range at a critical moment.

Accidently took a Me262 up with only 25% fuel.  Was in a big furball over a friendly base and I ran out of fuel.  I was doing about 400 mph so I pulled some Gs, popped gear and flaps and set up for a very short final approach.  Then my wing exploded as an enemy P51 pumped hundreds of rounds into my jet.  I bailed out safely though.  The P51 pilot then said "That was the first time I ever had to slow down to kill a 262".  I then logged off.

Readied a 262 on the runway.

I lay my ashtray beside the monitor and start the engines, with a cigarette in my left hand.

As I carefully steer, I smell something burning.

Golly-geemit the tip of the smoke fell of and is burning my key board protector skin!

As I hurriedly brush away the hot smudge, my fingertip catches a wheel break key and the 262 veers to it's direction.

"Aw geez!", in a classic panic situation I crank the rudder to the other side and suddenly, I heat a *snap!* as the wheels break off the 262.

The Schwalbe screeches along the runway and I close my eyes praying.. "oh please stop stop stop".. open my eyes and what do I see?

The 262 stopped in a location I can't tell if it's a 'ditch' or 'landed safely' zone.

 ...

It took good 10 minutes before I finally took a deep breath, opened the radio and typed in ".ef"

 ...

 "You have ditched"

 ..

 Ah.. C'est La vie!

ahh another expensive perk story. Bish's were down to two fields the other night and I wanted to fly a sortie or two. in the sky above the fioeld, there are like 50 bish's all capping the field, and one lone rook P-51 that is running from all of them. I up anyway thinking I will be OK. Well the P-51 sees me and makes a beline for me and I didnt even get my wheels up good when he nails me.

There were a group of 234's flying around so I grabbed a 262 and asked for location on those planes...got the location and proceeded over there.

I arrived and saw them coming in about my altitude so I approached for some quick headon shots hoping to put a couple away.

as I approached I noticed they were escorted by a 262 and a P51 also my altitude.

I continued my HO approach and missed all of them, came around keeping pretty flat for speed and headed after one of the 234's that broke and ran.

I chased him with the other 262 and the 51 on my tail.

The 51 gradually fell back but the other 262 was just a little ways behind me.

my total focus was on catching the 234. He went fairly straight and I was beginning to catch up to him slowly.

then ackburst started all around me, he had dragged me into his own ack... I was going fast enough that I only stayed in it for a short time and wasn't damaged but after dragging me in he cut throttle and broke hard left and down, I didn't want to fully engage with another 262 on my 6 and so close to his ack so I headed straight on while checking the map for something to clear me.

I spotted our CV not too far away and made a gentle descending right turn out to sea with the 262 in hot pursuit.

As I approached our CV the 262 scraped off and rtb, so there I was all this time searching figuring on some easy perk kills and I end up barely making it away after having flown a 200pts plane thru enemy ack.

I rtb went and got my trusty P47D30 out and went back to the regular fighting stuff..

My first Spit 14 took off and grabbed south toward where some action was.  While crossing over  at about 18,000 got hit one ping by the big guns and went boom.  That is all the Spit 14 flying I have done :)

Mine always seem to involve perk planes too :)

Second flight in a 262 during a squad night.  Reports of a big raid coming to HQ over the radio, it looked like the perfect opportunity to try it for buff hunting.  I launch, climb to the uber alt the cons were reported at and set up for the pounce.  I wait... and wait... finally I ask and find that all enemy buffs were down.  Crud.

Oh well, my squad was launching it's own buff raid at this point.  I decide why not do a little high speed escort.  I spot their dots coming... "Man what a nice formation.  I've GOT to film that!"  I turn gun camera on and head down to take some pictures of Denny and Colt.

As I fly through the formation, I laugh as they all start asking what I'm flying.  It's also then I realize I can't pull out!!     Trim it out... trim it out... please pull up!!   BOOM!

On Sunday prior to the reset, I upped a 234 with the rocket assist.  I decide to keep them as a kicker just in case I got into trouble (you know... kind of a Mad Max-ish nitrous button) ;)

Well I line up on the base... fighter hanger going down in 3... 2... 1... I punch the trigger... WHOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSH  I basically carry my eggs into the next sector before I realize it.  Next time I will make sure I have the correct weapon toggled ;)

I won't even mention the squaddie who was trying to defend the capped/vulched base.  Launch in a Spitfire... vulch... boom.  Launch in a Spitfire... vulched... boom... (repeat two more times before realizing that the SpitIX is the one ABOVE on the hanger!!)  Basically, four SpitXIVs burnt in less than a minute and a half :D

Is it just me, or is turning on the recorder like pressing the self-destruct button? The countdown to destruction begins whenever you spot something interesting. I've actually developed a superstition... it's like walking under a ladder. Had I not turned on the recorder, naturally I would have shot them all down.

I once drove for quite awhile in my M16 and then parked just out of range of the ack to attack a town.  As I was shifting to the gun position, I got run over and destroyed by an AI truck supply convoy.  I had parked on the supply road.

OK.. I didn't loose any perk points... but I sure did feel stupid.
