Combat Theater Open For Walk-Ons?
« on: May 16, 2002, 07:49:08 AM »
I've never flown there...can u just jump in and fly?  I would like to try something new.  Is this the same thing as the "Tour of Duty."  I am confused a bit...I have never ventured out of the MA.  Any help explaining the CT and "Special Events" would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Combat Theater Open For Walk-Ons?

Greetings.  The CT is an open arena, just as the Main is.  The difference is the CT uses historical (as possible with the current plane set) aircraft match ups to simulate a specific theater of operation, such as the current Battle of Britain set up.  The set up, terrain, and planeset rotates once a week on Friday evening (Eastern US time).  It also features modified radar settings and reduced icons to try to recreate a more historical "feel" to the combat.  Read the message of the day carefully when you enter the CT for the first time each week, as the current arena settings and planeset are listed there.  Some weeks the set up has special victory conditions listed that can lead to an Axis or Allied victory and a reset, while other times it's pretty free-flowing like the Main Arena.

The CT is a completely player-controlled arena, with a team of five volunteers that monitor it and come up with new set-ups each week.  We've also got some terrains that have been built specfically for the CT, and that are never used in the MA.  If you want a chance to fly aircraft against their historical opponents, such as the Spit Mk I vs. the Bf109E-4, this is the place.  Our numbers are usually about 10% of the population in the MA during peak hours, but the smaller maps mean finding a fight is usually not to hard.

Welcome, and enjoy.

28Sweep, the 1-life event you may be thinking of is the TOD (Tour of Duty) which is a squadron-only event held every Friday and I believe a new Saturday time.  But walk-ons are allowed with the permission/invite from a particular squadron.  The CT (Combat Theater) is just an arena like the MA (Main Arena) that has a restricted aircraft selection which changes each week.  You can die as much as you like there...I do.  Enjoy!

Excellent post, and what it demonstrates could be one reason
the turnout is so low in the CT.

I know its only one player, but it really could indicate we have a PR problem in the CT.

Re-nameing the CT to something like 'Allied/Axis' or 'Historic WWII' or whatever would go a long way  to ending the identy problem it has.
   Just one man's opinion....

Yes, I think a name change might help, and I've brought that up on the CT Staff board before.  Pyro seems reluctant to change it though, and I've not pressed the issue.  Anoher idea we talked about that he seemed to like but has not been implemented is to list the current tour name on the log-in screen.  That way, everytime you click "On-line" and get the list of arenas, the CT would say something like "CT: Battle of Britain" instead of just plain old "Combat Theater."  I'll have to start campaigning for this again.  The main issue is that that's a server-side thingamabob that CM's can't alter.  It would mean extra work for HTC, as only they can change the name of the arena that comes up on the clipboard log-in screen.

But...why??  "Combat Theater" is so....so....utterly meaningless.  Sounds like a place where you watch video.

I like that idea!  Especially now that we are getting a bunch more aircraft that will struggle in the MA but will have a place to shine in the CT.
