I was thinking if they gave the Defiant piolit something like 4 or 6 .303's, Than it would be a sucess. What do you think.

That would have made it even slower and less competitive than it was. The weight of that massive turret was too much of a handicap against fighters.
Of course, it was originally intended to attack bombers; the British never expected enemy bombers to be escorted, as they assumed that they would have to fly all the way from Germany rather than have fighter bases in France.
