Any other MMOG that are good?
« on: May 19, 2002, 07:20:17 PM »
AH is a great MMOG game, but are there any others?

I have tired FA, WB, AW, WWIIOL, and really dont like any of them. Il-2 is ok, but my system is kinda fussy with it.

you mean ww2 MMPOG? or any?

I kinda like EverQuest.. but only in player vs player servers.. I really dislike the idea of paying to fight against AI. Though IMO, it should be called "stuffquest" ... that's all you end up doing hehe.

Also looking foward to GALCOM ONLINE (http://www.3000ad.com).

Dark Age of Camelot is a good one. It started in October and has 200,000 subscribers. Like EQ and others but the nuance is in the PvP and the realm wars. Neat stuff.

Heh, remember OUTPOST? Eye candy doesnt mean good gameplay.

For example, look at another space MMPOG , JUMPGATE. Incredible graphics, but horrible gameplay and design.

I'm waiting for a demo or trial of EVE, until then I'll just see it as eye-candy.

I never trust a game that doesnt show INTERFACE screenshots.  The rest is just eyecandy.  Eve could rock, It's probably just going to be darkspace in 3d.

Unless you enjoy the idea of spending thousands of hours in pursuit of uber so that you can hold your own in the game, for the most part there arent any good games left.  You can either spend pointless hours killing things, pointless hours waiting for the uberphatlewtdragon to spawn, or show off your new uberarmor that you bought on ebay for only $50.

MMOG's are doomed.  The big ones have become money-grubbers who no longer care about making a good game, and are instead focusing on player retention through any means possible.  Ideally, they get thier players to quit, but keep thier accounts open because of the "investment".  Some of the smaller ones are better, but few have the resources.

Beware of any game where the developers don't love thier game.  When the developers cease to care, the game is doomed.

An excellent example is the game that I played before this, called Jumpgate.  The best game to compare it to is an mmog version of privateer or elite.  The most important part of it was that the developers cared during beta.  After release though, things changed.  They botched the launch with a bad publisher, who laid off all but one of thier staff two weeks into it.  There were a number of horrible changes, it became clear that nobody actually cared about the game.  The developers keep it alive now only because they are currently working on a new game, and need to be able to show an upcoming publisher that thier first project wasnt a complete failure.

Every game has a golden age, and then the creators give up.  When they cease to love the game, and cease to have a plan for it, the game is doomed.

Hmm, got a bit side-tracked.
Now, I have one question,  MMOG's have been constantly tweaked and changed to allow the game to be more accessible to the "casual gamer", I have yet to see a case where "idiot" wouldn't be a suitable substitute.  Is "casual gamer" just a euphemism for "idiot"?

--edit to reply to tac--

Jumpgate? Good graphics?  Damn it's been too long since you've played :P  The graphics are SOOOOOO 1997.  And slow as hell considering the relativly small polycount.

It's free, and the developers love their game :)

Jumpgate had great graphics for the time it was released in. And to date, no game has been able to match its laser fire fx (was the coolest ever).

I was in the beta too, and imo, the game was horrendously fukd from the beggining. Jumpgate is an excellent example of lack of GAMEPLAY.

Their interface was good, graphics were good, sound was good, I loved their music. But the way they made the ships and the factions was horrible. I dont know when you joined the beta, but when I came in the map was barely 12 jumpoints. Throught the whole beta, ship to ship combat was nothing but HO turn HO turn HO turn HO. Incredibly stupid.

There was ONE time in which the testers almost convinced the devs to give each faction a kind of fighting specialty in the ship design itself. The octavians already had their ungodly ships that could load the heaviest hitting guns and the biggest reactors to power them indefinately. But the other 2 factions were stuck with either being able to turn faster (quan)..which was useless if the only way to fight was to HO your opponent, or speed and shields for the solranian..which was useless if you were going to fight an oct or a quantar. It made no sense.

The specialty we asked only needed a minor change in the ship designs. Namely we left the oct ships as they were... the quantar would specialize in missiles and continous beam weapons while the solranians specialized in heavy mortars and lasers. And it made sense to the faction history too. Octs were warrior caste.. so of course their ships were heavily armed and armoured, albeit less manouverable and slower. Quan were miners, so they would have ships that could use continous beam weapons (not laser, im talking like the featherfire gun and the other one that stayed on as long as you left the trigger pressed) and quan ships would be able to load large amounts of missiles. The sol would have faster, better shielded ships and would be able to power lasers easily or use heavy mortars (their ships being so fast the weight of the mortars was negligible). And we actually tested this online limiting each faction's ships to certain loads. It completely balanced the shipset.

But the devs ignored it and went on to add toejamty in-between ships like the starter ship and other crapola which was really a band-aid applied to the gaping chest wound in their ship balance problem.

Last time I played JG they had added some kind of defense drones to the bases.. so players couldnt kill each other in or near a base. And they added AI ships named after shrimp and squids and the like, it all became so stupid and pointless it was sickening :(

Subspace rules.  Esp when you consider it was one of the first internet-only games.  Anyone who liked subspace should take a look at infantry, same dev team.

Tac: You should see combat now, the jousting attacks are mostly gone(Unfortunatly, so is the divebombing which made it stop, so it's coming  back slowly)  The drones you talk of are trivial to ignore.  What you might get a kick out of is the recent addition of "ranger" class ships, which are so obscenely fast that nothing can kill them.  I was able to, along with the help of the other three guys in my squad,  completely wipe the floor with an attacking force of over 40 pilots, without any of them killing any of us.

It's the classic example of a dev team who ceased to care about thier game.

I tried Jumpgate and did not find it to my liking.  The graphics were nice but there was little or no sense of mission.  The designers kept saying that there were going to implement a large arching storyline but that never developed much furhter than talk/text.

What about Battlefield 1942?  Or will this online game be similar to AH?  (which brings up the question about definition of a MMOG...but i digress)

I was in on the beta for JumpGate also. It was rather addictive but it could be somewhat monotonous.

There were indeed some missions, but much like AH, you had to organize it on your own. I flew some stuff with the Quantar Movers and had a pretty good time. Not good enough for me to drop AH and play it instead when it went full up, but I was definitely hooked on it.

I agree with Tac, though. The squids were quite often a pain in the ass. Some of them were just completely unbeatable until you gained enough fire power.

All in all, the game reminded me of Elite. A game I really used to love back in the day.

Oh... and EVE looks spectacular. :)

None out now that I like (played Everstuff into the ground, and lost interest in doing it again...so no Camelot either).

However, there are a few games in the pipes that look fairly good.

City of Heroes.  Think EverQuest with spandex.  Fame instead of gold.

Planetside.  Big mulitplayer shooter game with vehicles.  Sci-fi angle might be overdone though.

WW 2 Online.....maybe.  Someday they might patch it up to a playable state.  It still has promise. It definetly is the best damn tank sim I've ever played at any rate, just wish the rest of the game was as good so I don't feel guilty playing tanks.
