First off, thanks to HTC, not only for such a kick bellybutton game, but for turning me on to http://www.internetwines.com

This site really kicks the cat in the face. Anyhow, I really like Single Malt Scotch. Like most beginers, I still favor the Speyside Scotches (Aberlour and Glinlivet mostly), but I'm opening up to others. At the same time however, I've been playing around with other Whiskeys. I'm partial to Knob Creek for Bourbon, but my first experience with Rye was this past week. I bought a bottle of "Old Rip Van Winkle" Which is a 12 year old Rye (which I guess means they must age in conditioned barrels, as opposed to new ones, like Bourbon.

) Now the name is pretty scarry to me. It brings up images of "Old Crow" and some very, very foul booze. But as it turns out, this was a very tasty product. I was very pleased with my purchase, and I'm glad that I went ahead and ordered it from Randal's (internetwines.com) instead of just getting a bottle of cheap stuff at the local liquer store.

Anyhow, since I don't have anything to compare it to, I was wondering if anyone else was a big fan of Rye, and if anyone knows how this particular brand compares to others on the market at a similar price ($30 per 750ml bottle).

there's always my old favorite Crown Royal or if you got the extra money $45-50 a 5th go for the limited reserve. also I like Alberta Springs, was about $22 a 5th 7 or 8 years ago but i haven't seen it around since then

btw for those who don't know canadian whisky=rye whisky

Awful stuff...

When I was in Canada I used to order Rum & Cokes at the bars and due to the loud music etc. many times I would get Rye & Coke. If this happened early in the evening it was fine...I would get the drink changed...if I was "full hot" then my taste buds wouldn't pick up the difference....whenever this happened I would be violently ill the next day.

I must have an allergy to Rye or something...

My roomates would hear me ralfing the day after a night out and they would always ask "Drank Rye again by accident?"...I would lift my head out of the porcelin enough to weakly nod at them and then hurl again...it became almost a tradition.

curval, the problem was you polluted it with coke.

the proper way to drink rye is serve it cold, no mixer, no ice, no water. just rye and the glass

Rye is meant to be served cold??

I thought it was ment to be served at room temperature, just like any other uisge beatha *basks in pretention*.

My personal preference is cold. Put the bottle in the freezer for a day. It looks almost like golden mercury in the glass. The flavor is much more defined and the feeling when the ice cold drink turns to heat in your stomach can't be beat.

Damn I really want a drink now. Damn meds the Dr. has me on, I can't drink on them, haven't had a drink in 2 years.

Sikboy, as far as single malt goes, try Macallans. Excellent stuff, but rather pricey. (btw dont tell HT but i think it tastes 10 times better than crag.)

I also have to agree that Alberta Springs is a fine rye for its price. Avoid gayley popular rye like Crown Royal. I have no idea why people buy/consme this oddly sweet junk. Maybe because it is a few ducks more for a bottle and they think they are elite rye drinkers.

I like to drink my rye on ice as capt.apathy does, but with a small twist of fresh lime. However i dont chill the rye first. Pouring room temperature rye over ice gives it a smooth, easily quoffable taste.

, ice melts and turns to water diluting your drink. Cool your drink in the bottle and drink it clean.
