I was with Verm when he did the Warbirds Adventures in an AT-6 Texan in Orlando (Florida) several years ago.  He coughed up the $300 admission and I stayed on the tarmac.  When the plane came down, he was ear to ear grins and bragging like he was John Wayne's wingman.  We watched his video and it was non-stop "Oh, wow!" and "Coooool!" and "Yeee-Haaaa!".  I was laughing hysterically the whole time it was running, and man I wished I had brought more money with me because I was ready to lay down the cash and strap on the helmet myself.  I still have that video somewhere in my library.

So, kids, let this be a lesson to ya.  Don't mix (a) a computer software geek, (b) readily-available cash money, and (c) a tanned flight instructor in khaki cargo shorts standing on the wing of a vintage WW2 trainer saying "One of you guys want to go for a ride?  We offer several packages, including a 30-minute aerobatics flight, complete with still photos and a video ..."

PS: at the time, Verm knew me as "Pancake" of the Skull Squadron on AOL :)

Damn... now thats a voice from the grave ;)

How you been Cakes? Me and Whels (who was also with us that day) both fly with the **MOL ** here. Several of the old Skulls are here.

I'm not in the arena much last couple of months but keep an eye out for me.

When you start flying here? How's the Wife? You two still in Tampa? Coming to the Con?

Well if that ain't the ultimate triumph  of Capitalism over Communism. We've turned there military and space program into Disneyland east. "Hey there Boris, I'll give ya 50 sheckles for a seat on Mr. Toaderovs wild ride!!!"

Avid

Note - For those that have never been to Disneyland there is a ride there called Mr. Toads Wild Ride, thus being the reason for the for the Mr. Toderov's reference. Get it Toaderov's wild ride??? Come on kids lets all laugh at the funny man now!!

had a buddy who did the Migs over Moscow flight last year

cost him 10g's, spent 2 weeks at an A/F base, doing ground school, basic flight training and simulator time before getting a
one hour flight

says it was worth every penny...

He was going to wait to see if the price came down but he wanted it for his 75th birthday so there wasn't much latitude there.... ;)

I remember that day like it was yesterday.  It was warm, but not as hot as most Florida afternoons can get.  The sky was clear with a few puffy white cumulus nimbus clouds.  As Chuck Yeager said in his air combat sim - It was a great day for flying!

Whels wasn't with us until we synched up at Fantasy of Flight in Polk City, so it was just you, me, and your cousin (I think) touring the Warbirds Museum in Kissimmee (near Orlando, Florida, for those booking vacation plans) when you made your first flight.  They were building an F4U Corsair in the back and had an A-26 Invader parked in front of the hangar.  The hangar was littered with various projects, including an old Link trainer, a Spitfire dummy gate guard, a Mig-21 that had been confiscated down in Miami, a couple of AT-6s (or SNJs) for minor repair, and an A-4 Skyhawk.  The AT-6 Warbird Adventure flyboys were strategically placed on the tarmac between the museum and the hangar for TF-51 Crazy Horse so that we had to walk by them to get out.  Isn't there a law against hunting a baited field? :)

I've got the photos of us 3 Skull Squadron brothers posing in front of the Liberator at FoF somewhere in my album.  I heard that they've added several aircraft to the collection, mostly as a result of Kermit Weeks closing down his exhibit in Miami.  They've got a Martin Marauder flight-ready that's been touring some of the airshows.

Yeah, I'm still in Florida, still in Tampa, in the same house, but the computer room isn't nearly as cluttered as it was the day you dropped by - most of my toys are in boxes in the garage now.  I haven't been flying in the arena much because my brother is trying to get me addicted to golf... and its working.  I've come to the conclusion that Florida must be the state with the most golf courses per acreage, or darn close to it (Arizona and Texas probably rank right up there, too).  I got a golf ball to almost do a complete barrell roll one day at the driving range :)

Probably won't get to the con, even though I've always wanted to go to one of them just to see what its all about.  Our vacation plans this year will be modest, and I can't get the wife on a plane anyway.  Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll have a con here or in Georgia one year that I can get to.  I'd like to see a con in either Orlando (FoF, Warbirds Museum, and Int'l Sport Aviation Museum are within 35 minute driving range) or Savannah (the Mighty 8th Heritage Museum is a very good place to spend a day).

I'm sure we'll bump into each other in the MA eventually - some late night when its quiet (too quiet) you'll hear a voice crackle through your headphones saying "My wing's shot up and I'm leaking oil.  Looks like I'm not going to make it back.  Tell my wife I love her!"

BTW: gofaster your quote is wrong -- it is 300 yards not 400 miles;)

Here is the Quote: "I run my unit how I run my unit. You want to investigate me, roll the dice and take your chances. I eat breakfast 300 yards from 4000 Cubans who are trained to kill me, so don't think for one second that you can come down here, flash a badge, and make me nervous."

Gentlemen:  If you ever have the chance....go to Wright Patterson AFB Museum.  It is the Mecca of Warbirds for us enthusiasts.  I make a pilgrimage at least once a year.  They have everything from Bocks Car, to the A26, B26, 262 and the 163.  You name it...and it's there.  Including Jets..........to the past Presidents Air Force One rides.

Tante Ju is parked outside.........and the Peacemaker is humongus.  The size of the place is unbelieveable.......two B52s are suspended from the ceiling partially, and the Peacemaker makes them look like Cessna 150s.  The displays are also great.  From Prisoner of War Camps in the PAC and Euro.......to the Berlin Wall.  It's a trip that all who love vintage and modern warbirds has to make!  They also have the last Valkyrie!

You guys talking about the Orlando Flight restoration museum at Kissimmee? They have several A-6's availible to fly for a price and alot of great planes being restored in the hanger...Seems to me I have a photo of a FW190 they pulled from Norway, and apparently know the story how it ended up on the side of a mountain. was a nice escape for an afternoon well worth the $8.00 admission for the Tour if I remember corectly...
Has anyone been to Fantasy of flight near O-Town?
Is it worth the 2 hour drive ?

TOJO,

I haven't been to it for a while..last time I drove by I almost ran off the road.. They own a B-26 Maurader that was landing at the time... I had to make a U-turn on I-4 and go and see it.  Great looking plane!! They also have a Duck there too..forget the actual model name..any how.. it's a cool place.  Kissimmee warbirds are great too.. couple of months ago they had a B-25 fly in..went down there and saw those too.. and ye gotta see Crazy Horse..bute of a pony!
