Spit IX faster than P51??? You be the judge...
« on: August 29, 2000, 01:04:00 PM »
While I'm on the theme of not understanding 2 of my first fights since returning to AH, here's a great one.

Last night, I was flying a P51 from A1, loaded only with 50cal. No DT, no other ordinance.

I flew NE for a bit, gaining speed. Soon I picked up a Bishop Spitfire. I was being shadowed by a teammate, who saw this entire episode and was equally puzzled.

For the next 6 quadrants, the Spitfire ran SE at full speed. Neither climbing nor diving, he remained at a constant altitude for at least 150 miles.

When we first engaged, I was approximately 1.5k out from him, same altitude, same heading, having just descended a bit to pick up his 6. Instead of closing that gap, as I expected to do in my P51, it grew.

Over the next 150 miles, without altering altitude, heading, or anything other than auto-pilot, the SpitFire steadily pulled ahead of me.

By the time we were reaching the SE corner of the map, deep in his territory, I was 4.6k back.

My film shows an interesting thing.

I and my teammate were on the public channels constantly asking what was happening, and who was the Bishop Spitfire near each base that he passed. We received no response.

All of a sudden, the guys Spitfire starts smoking and descending as if it had been shot down. I had absolutely no clue why it would have started smoking, it had never been damaged nor had I ever managed to hit it.

I immediately dove, and was able to ping him once right before he hit the ground. It gave me the kill victory and let me know I shot down eric1.

Now as I am on the radio asking wtf is happening, someone from his team says, hey its his first night, give him a break, etc.

My question..how did this happen?
How did a Spitfire IX outrun a fresh P51 for over 150 miles? Is there any explanation?

Someone hinted that it was a bad connection. What on earth would make a bad connection translate into being faster than normal.

Your ideas are appreciated...thanks

That someone was probably right about the bad connection.

You were most likely chasing a ghost.

What can sometimes happen is that you will disco, and the server for some reason, will keep tracking your last known heading/speed and a "ghost plane" will be in the arena.

I can remember at least two times in beta when I got disco'd, relogged and launched another aircraft, only to find myself flying in the distance.

I tried to chase myself down and shoot me down (virtual suicide?) , but I could never close the gap.

Well...he maneuvered away from me in the beginning, but then flew straight for a long long time. Then right as I assume he was running out of fuel, or whatever, his plane starts smoking.

I pinged him right before he hit the ground.

If that was a ghost, how did I ping it and get a victory for killing him?

I too have had a spitty chase me in my 51.  How on earth could a spitty hold 450 and gain on me???  Everytime I try the spitty it bleeds speed at level flight!!  Some wierd things sure do happen!!

Botabing,
It sounds like he lost connect early on during the chase.  You were in effect, chasing a ghost.  For some odd reason, the server still tracked him for sometime before it finally decided to drop him.

The damage that finally registered on your FE might have been done much earlier.

It seems like a connect thing to me.

Why would a ghost ship go faster than a normal ship of the same type? Im not real technically minded hehe so please explain for us dummies...

One other detail I forgot, a teammate of his said he was new and to give him a break, and that was after the fight. so he apparently was talking to them but not to me over public channel.

Botabing,
He might have dived and built up a bit of steam.  If he'd built up to 500 ot 550 he could have been going level for quite awhile before you saw him at 450.  That way he might have been doing 450 or so when he disconnected.  Once he was a ghost, he just kept moving along at 450 because the server wasn't receiving any new info from his FE that he had changed speed from 450, i.e. decelerated.  You and you countryman may have been chasing a 450mph ghost that way.

Ok I'm thinking that makes as much sense as anything I've heard so far. If he was going
say 425 or 450 when he disconnected, he would still be going that fast, but would take a while for the server to realize he disconnected?

Maybe that would explain why eventually, he just started smoking as if he had been shot and he fell to the ground. I was right at his crash sight, I had pinged his ghost, so maybe it gave me credit for the kill because of that stuff?

Ya know I see more and more storys about the spitfire outruning planes that that they shouldnt be able to and somehow I find it hard to beleave the ghost thing. Only ghost ive ever found were froze in midair.

There has to be a bug in the spitfires FM.

I remember several months ago, me and tern got into a low alt fight, he was in a spit, or so i thought. After the fight, i congrats him on his spit E retention. He tells me he was in a pony. Anyways, this is prolly your problem. Heres a link to a thread started on the problem.

Hmmmmm....

Well, on a related note, does anyone here know any way of cheating that would be making people appear to be in a different plane than they are, or that would make them go faster?

Bot...

If anyone knew of a cheat i would prefer them to email HT or Pyro directly and not post it on this board.

I know of a few guys that take pleasure in exploiting bugs or cheats.

Dog out...

I remember once engaging a B-17 being escorted by a 109.  After I make two good passes on the B-17, suddenly the 109 blows up.  I had not even shot at it.

Checking six, following my last pass, I see the B-17 chasing and shooting at me with his chin guns.  I am LMAO as this but B-17 brilliantly follows my hard evasives and then shoots me down.

Later I asked the guy who I killed in the 109 (Azrael) how come he suddenly blew up.  His response was that I shot him down.  I told him that I never fired a shot at him.

Later in our conversation he revealed that he was not flying the 109, he was flying the B-17.  He also told me that his escort, the 109, was the one who shot me down.  Not the B-17.

LOL    Go figure...
