Please do something with the icons, anything will do...
« on: January 28, 2000, 04:24:00 AM »
I know we must have the icons with this 3 side system.

But The icons are so huge, I see a con just as an small dot far away, as he comes into icon range WHAM a 10 mile wide RED icon pops up above the plane (relative to his size).
Is there no way we at least could make the icons scalable(spell check) so when the con is far away, so is the icons(very small when far away).
The icons should not get the current size until the con is at D3 or closer.

If the Icons also had a level of transparency, the further away they is the more transparent they are ?

In my opinion the best result would be a wery tiny an realtively transparent icon in long distance, which would be dificult to spot at first, but easier to spot at closer range.

Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
The smell, you know that gasoline smell, smelled like victory.

Ever been in the tailgunner position in a B17 and the Evil Bad Guy is closing from 1K but you cannot pick him out because he is buried in about 9 friendly icons belonging to your 8K back escorts??

I have and it ain't pretty.

Please do something about the Icons, and soon.

Icons inside 3K, no plane ID, just let us know it is a bad guy.

Personally, I would like no Icons at all but realize this is not possible given the differing wants of computer gamers.

I too would like to see them reduced if possible. They do tend to overlap one another when several bad guys are in the same place, makes it hard to distinguish who is going which way.

I've been know to negatively comment <ahem> occasionally about icons in general.

OK, we need icons at distance due to all the technological limitations <although I think some of this stuff is smoke to cover a lack of desire to really try new options :0 >.

But why oh why do we need all that extra info when the plane is so close that current technology DOES allow you to tell what it is?

At short ranges there's NO NEED for aircraft TYPE and DISTANCE TO TARGET; your Mark I eyeball should be telling you that.

Since we do fly all types in all countries, however, there needs to be an IFF function so you don't shoot down your mates.

This could be a red dot or any one of a number of solutions that folks have suggested.

But, like the entire icon issue, I suspect there are not enough complaints to justify experimentation to improve.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

How bout this simple solution.
Since we can toggle icons using alt I, why not make all enemy dots red, that way you can toggle the icons off all together, and concentrate on the lil red buggers that are enemys..if they are close enuf..you see a plane, otherwise you see a red dot in the distance..no icon flashing in your face.
Best of all, this is already in the game, just need to change dot color to red for enemys. Or better yet, let us choose our own colors like brand x sim..dont like red..make em blue..or whatever you choose.

Ive said this to HT before and he told me there were no plans to do anything new with icons (cept maybe mess with distances). Personally i feel they are a big problem at the moment. Who ever got the "bounce" was a major decidingfactor in most WW2 dogfights (i read it somewhere ok   ) As it is once a plane is in icon distance its virtually unmissable even if u come in low 6 ur usually given away by the huge red banner.

I and i think many others would like to see an inovative approach taken to icons in AH. How about making the icons less visable by making them camouflaged against the sky or ground. See example.

Now this is just an idea and may not work but if something was devised to improve the situation i think it would win AH quite a few customers (mainly from WB).

This just a thought but,,what if we could only give friendlys the icon,,,that way we would leave some of this HO activeaty....I like HO but if you ever fly a P51 and see a Any thing with 20mm's thay love to HO on you beacause thay have bigger guns but if thay didnt know what you where flying thay mite not do it all the time...it would give more to strategy...???

Simple solution: Only icons for friendlies within 4k, no enemy icons, thats what I would like it to be for once

Even then Fishu u still have a huge banner on your head. Another solution might be to use the effect that they have on the text buffer (message alpha) to make the icon near invisable meaning you would have to keep a constant look out for cons. As the icon approached it could become more visable. See another example   .
