hey guys n gals i'm in the market for a new processor and motherboard. my current system is a PIII 733Mhz with a motherboard whose manufacturer escapes me at the moment (don't have access to my comp it's 1600 miles away) anyway it only supports PIII processors and below. and a gigabyte geforce 3 vid card.
i'm looking for a processor/MB combo in the $200 or less range i was told that upgrading to any P4 processor would give fairly significant improvements in performance compared to what i have now. anyone able to verify this?

you can get a P4 and mobo for under $200??

For the $200 range, P4 is totally out of the question. You need to get Athlon or Athlon XP.

Go here. You want one of the "Athlon (OEM) & DDR Bundles".

Get a motherboard with VIA KT266A or VIA KT333 or nVidia nForce chipset, at least 256 MB of RAM, and as much CPU as you can afford.

If you are wondering what chipset a motherboard has, just go here and look up the manufacturer and board and click on "specs".

I have had a lot of good luck with Epox motherboards.

PS If you get VIA KT333 you will want PC2700 RAM. You can get bundles with that RAM here.

AMD just dropped their prices on their XP processors significantly this week. Take a look at http://www.anandtech.com for the lowest available prices.

You can get an an IWILL KK266plus or equivilent Mobo and an Athlon 1 Gig or better chip at any Fry's electronics store for under $200. Have a gander at Fry's Outpost website.

thanks for the recommendations and the links

oh btw i got the price range mixed up i meant $250-200 or less.
never had anything but intel sooo i'm still a bit wary....has anyone very recently switched from intel to AMD or anyone with 2 comparable systems (AMD and intel) that can tell me which is better? yeah i've read the reviews seen some benchmarks but not recently though.

Intel lowered the price on the 2.0 and 2.2 gig Northwood processors recently, I just ordered a 2gig Northwood for $198 from googlegear. Got .50 cent 2nd day Fed-Ex also
