So I tried WWIIOL
« on: June 04, 2002, 08:10:53 AM »
My handle is 'akamu'

Besides the fact the stick problems keeping me out AH haven't been fixed, I tried the game.

Some mental thoughts:

A - I feel more immersed when flying with the canopy open. There is a nice feel to it.

B - However, the fact that the flying itself feels like an arcade is very frustrating. The 110 rolls better then our 190. Yeesh.

C - I tried walking around. Sounds were... not right though. I couldn't tell where the fighting was or where vehicles were coming from. Graphics...were not good from that viewpoint.

D - Driving a truck was more fun. I actually enjoyed driving around towns until some fool shot my tires or something and i crashed. I wish you could exit and fight on foot at that point. Would make the game better for me.

E - Loading times were not as bad as I thought, though they were long. Flying wasn't all that hard on my PIII800Mhz with 256mb ram either. Could be better but not as horrible as I imagined.

D - there is a real detachment from the online universe there. No roster I could find, and you really couldnt tell who was what. Maybe because they have thousands of players but I felt like a very small ant in a sandbox of many.

Im gonna play it when 1.6 comes out to see if I like it any better but right now I can't justify spending an extra $10 a month.

Is it any better?

I have the box up on the shelf...I installed it on my P3 550 and it was too damn slow... 15 minute load times.  I've since upgraded to a Athlon XP 2000+ / 1.666 ghz

I found the controls to be pretty difficult to figure out.  Once I made it up, I was impressed with the towns, the sky, etc...I did manage to find a fire fight in a town once, and dove in and did a few straffing runs...but I hit a building and sat there for 10 minutes waiting to respawn and figured that was enough for one day.

Is it worth re-installing?  I'll definately grab the updates from here at work (dialup at home) if its worth a looksey

I would suggest waiting until 1.6 is released before trying it again. The update will be in the 100+MB range, but they are releasing a CD that you can buy ($5?) for those that don't have broadband connections.

Mental Vision of moose driving around in his delivery truck, sniper rattles his truck with machine guns. Tire blows, he runs in the ditch, gets stuck, Picturing moose mad & pressing different buttons trying to figure out how to get out of his truck and throw down on the sniper's head. :D

get back in AH moose, we gotta slap around the AK's.

" would suggest waiting until 1.6 is released before trying it again. "

From past observation I recommend waiting till at LEAST version 1.63 before trying ;)

I almost bought the first box version on a shelf that I've seen around here in over 6 mos.  It was part of a 3 game combo-set called "Combat somehting .... something ...er nother" and was $20.   I figured it would be good for the free 30 day trial that comes with buying it. I put it back pending the next 2-week trial. I've tried the latest beta release (1.629 & offline only) and while it is improved somewhat I figure I'll wait till the die hard guinea pigs/fan boi's test it good, find the bugs and it becomes stable.

I tired WWIIOL a while back (In January-March), and it really wasn't for me.

1) Foot solider - I spawn a t a FB as a foot solider, there are amny tanks and trucks, but they all dirve away. No one will give me a ride. So i run/walk to the base for about 30 mins. I get there to have a tank run me over

2) Airplane's - After having a Ju87 outrun, outroll, and outgun my 110C and 109E, i decided planes wern't for me. The bomber's are the best "fighters" in the game.

3) AA or AT gun - It's ok....if you can find someone to tow you...

4) Tanks - I did enjoy the tanks. They have a wide range of tanks, and these were what i used most of the time. But there were some issue's. I got straffed a few times by a 109E while in a Char - BIS (i think?).

If the game was just tanks, i might consider to continue paying for it, but as it is right now, it's not worth it.

Just like any other sim, if you dont hook up with a squad or someone else, your a loner. Aned you wont have much fun. I've been playing wwiiol since October and can always find some squad activity (although the axis seems more organized) going on. You also have to give the learning curve a chance to smooth itself out. I've got it loaded on machines ranging from a PIII 450 / 384 PC 133 ram, right on up to an Athalon  1.4 Tbird/ 512 megs DDR ram, and a couple that fall in between. Load times are fine.

1.6 has new AA/AT guns , vehicles, smaller memory footprint for the system impared...evfen recoil modeled for the footsoldiers rifles and pistols. I've been testing the 1.6 beta for about a month now and it looks like a MAJOR leap forward. Sure the AC are a little goofy,( and they WILL be looked at soon ;) ) but for a total sim package its an excelent choice. As far as the ground effects/ war they waffle evreyone else hands down.

If you check places like Staples, best buy, hell even Walmart. The disc set can be had for about  10 bucks now. This will get you one months online play as it comes with a free 30 day trail code key. But dont bother using the disc , cause it will have to update  a heap. DL the latest version here:

  http://www5.playnet.com/bv/wwiiol/downloads.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1449401739.1023236186@@@@&BV_EngineID=eadcefegdkeebjjcgmcggichhl.0#wwiiol

Latest version is 1.55, game MANUAL also available here for DL in pdf form.

To creat an acct go here:

http://www5.playnet.com/bv/adm/wwiiol/signup.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0035215883.1023236532@@@@&BV_EngineID=eadcefegdkeebjjcgmcggichhl.0

If you have the code key from the disc your all set for 1 month. If not.... WTF,its only 10 bucks to try it for a month.Heheh  skip coffee on the way to work a few days, or save your change for a week.

Things have a ways to go yet, but I like the vision and eventual goal of what the sim has now and will eventually offer.I find it quite enjoyable. If youy get there and see me Ol gimme a yell, same callsign.

blkmgc, let us know when the FM and planes ARE looked at.  Oh, and the 64 visible player bias (which should be done before the FM is looked at, IMO.)

Then I'll give the game another try.
