Rockets ?
« on: June 06, 2002, 12:55:23 AM »
I had heard that rockets effect performace even after you shoot them due to the rails remaining on the plane.  Wondering if this is true.  Also, anyone have any idea how much firepower the various rockets have?

Good example is the ME110, it can carry 4 50kg bombs or 4 210mm rockets, how do those compare?

Thanks,

Take they rockets, at least they are effective against GV's.  And yes the racks are still present after rockets are fired and cause additional drag.

Planes that carry their rockets in tubes, such as the German rockets, have drag that remains in effect after the rockets are launched.  Others, like the ones on the P-51, P-38, and F4U mount to very small rails under the wings.  Once the rocket leaves the plane, the residual effect (if any) is minute.

The Typhoon and Mosquito both use a rail system that seriously degrades performan, even after the rockets are fired.

I rarely take them due to that, prefering the bombs instead.

rocket damage is overmodeled :D and most ac carry more rockets than bombs. when doing ground attacks i'm dead sooner or later anyway, no matter what drag.

With the new buff formations coming, I was toying with the idea of using the air-to-air WGr21 on the german planes for buff attacks.
Anyone know if it's possible to set the fuse on them?  Based on off-line testing, they seem to default to explode at about D1.3.  You can't even set the convergence out that far.

best rockets for air to ground work are the RS-132 rockets on the Il-2 Sturmovik.  They have very little drop on launch and hit very hard--only 2 rockets usually needed for a Panzer kill.

Any single rocket direct hit on panzer will reliably knock him out.

Thanks for the responses.  I went offline and looked external at the various rocket packages and you can definately see the drag they would induce, even after firing the rockets.

It's a tough call for me.  I have a real hard time hitting accurately with rockets, I find I need to unload every rocket I have and even then I've failed to knock out various ground targets.

One thing that seems to help is firing from 90 degrees.  Being straight down seems to prevent the drop in trajectory I run into and them seem to be more accurate when fired this way.  Doesn't seem too realistic though.

Anyone have any tips for pin point rocket use?

try 30deg dive angle, aim with lower brim of crosshair, shoot at d1.4 (or as soon as the icon appears), no rudder of course, and take into account on which wing the rocket you're firing is attached too.
