Why can't you buy WWIIonline...
« on: June 10, 2002, 01:00:58 PM »
online? I mean download like AH? If its because of a key, heck, they can send ya that. It's no where to be found in my area and I was going to try the new version. Guess I could order it from somewhere but I'm an impatient sort. My daily prayer is "Lord give me patience...just give it to me now!"

Seems like they are cutting thier nose off to spite thier face,IMO.

Well, the "boxed" game blew donkey nuts and so many people returned their copy they had to drop that stillborn from the shelf.

It's twitching ever so slightly... but the lack of life support means this ones gonna hit the grave in a year.

There's no way they can be getting any kind of a profit over there... I'm surprised people still advertise on that website.

In other words- I think you might be SOL except for mail order Apache... or you can prolly buy it off some other poor guy who bought it and couldn't return it but didn't use their CD key.

Check E-bay, you can prolly score a copy there for like 20 cents.. about what they should of sold it for in the first place. :)

When it first came out it was not available as a free download . You had to buy the box if you wanted to try it at all . In short, they wanted to make sure they had your money before you found out how bad it sucked .

Also they will make more money selling a box, and charging a monthly subscription fee. When the expansions come out i.e. pacific, eastern front, you will also have to buy those off the shelf .

That's pretty much the way all MMOG's are done, AH, WB and the rest of the not so massive OG's are the exception .

Hawk, when you pass it over to Apache, you have to contact WW2OL/PLAYNET and go through a toejamload of red tape to "transfer" your CDKEY ownership to him.

Tac, thanks for the tip,.. do you know if it matters that I never paid for the service? I got my copy on release day and played during the long free period.. then when they started charging I didn't play.

thanks

I have an extra copy I bought in the cheapo bin at Wal-Mart. Anyone that wants the key is welcome to it- and you can download the game from the CRS ftp site.

No problem with that I imagine so long as he gives you the logon info with which you could just change to suit yourself.  What IS most important is that his handle wasn't "Blair" or any phonetical version of the same ;)

From the CD install, you can d/l version 0000164.exe about 97 megs, delete the CINE folder and usually good to launch. There will probably be a full install to 1.6.4 sometime. Europeans can buy a CD key needed to create an account from CRS..9.95 with 7 days free play. In the US, Strat First prolly prevents their doing that. A lot of ppl in  WW2Ol will buy a boxed version and sell the keys for cost using Paypal or whatever for payment. I have no idea how much trouble it is to transfer a cd key, but hatch@playnet.com would be the one to start with.

CRS is not the publisher and has no control over the boxed version. They always made most of their money from the subscription and Strategy First the publisher got the lion share of the box proceeds.
