Yeah.

Cool, huh?
21 hardpoints if I recall correctly.
80% more fuel than the normal F-16.

It competed with the F-15E for strike role.

I guess two engines are a very big advantage, cause otherwise the F-16XL was better and more cost effective.

Today few hours back one of the Finnish Air Force F/A-18 Hornets made emergency landing because it lost oil pressure of one engine and pilot had to shut it down to avoid problem.

If it had been single engined plane like F-16 or Mirage (both were considered by FAF) we would have one plane less now :)

If you look at jet development history, it seems that two engine fighters were built during peace time while single engine fighters were built during war.

Of course... the F16 is an exception.

I remember that prototype from years ago but forgot all about it.  I wonder why it never went into production?  I'm guessing it was 'good' but not good enough to justify the cost.  Anyone have any hard data?

Hang- P38 isn't a twin engine jet. ;)

Phantom II (XF4H-1) flew on 27 May 1958.

First flight of the F4 was 1958. Deployed in 1961.

As for looks... I've always thought the Swedes had the best one...

Ahem and the Me262 (2engs @ war), too... and the F-15 (2engs @ war), the FH-1 Phantom (2engs @ war), F2H Banshee (2engs @ war),  Gloster Meteor (2engs @ war),  the Mirage (1 eng @ peace) , the Viggen(1 eng @ peace), Draken(1 eng @ peace) & Gripen(1 eng @ peace), technically speaking Migs 9 thru 21(1 eng @ peace), & the 23-M(1 eng @ peace), in fact a whole load of other jets are exceptions. Not much of a pattern really.

Guess I should have said U.S. fighters. :)

I often lose sight of the fact that this is a world-wide forum.
