Azrael wanted to start one, not sure what became of it.

JG2 will have a dedicated bomber squad once we have a German bomber available.

There are some, at least according to the roster.

I just formed a 1-member-squad to see how the squad logo work; founding a buff squad seems currently impossible since there aren't enough dedicated buff drivers at euro times.

Az

While I'm at it - if someone is interested in forming a buff squad or is looking for a buff driver, see  http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/Forum11/HTML/000142.html

In SFRT we have both a fighter wing and a buff wing. But usually what happens is that people fly buff till they get good enought in a fig then switch to the fig wing.

But we have some dedicated pilots who fly only buff. We are trying to simulate a WW2 squadron, so each pilot have his own aircraft and we draw kill signs on it after each squad night.

Have a look to it if you want:

Totally dedicated bomber squads died back near the end of beta, and the beginning of the regular Aces High, due to the playability imbalance in effect at that time.

At that time buffs were being shot out of the sky at will. Aces High has since changed the damage model on the bombers, changed the 50 cal guns, and made some other flight modifications that make flying buffs a lot of fun again. Now you often find yourself trying to deal with a damaged bomber on the way to the target as opposed to the old days when it was hit hit hit bang wing gone.

In spite of these changes I think it would be really tough to get a totally dedicated bomber squadron going again. In spite of the new changes it's tough to keep a dedicated bomber squad together when it's so hard just to get enough good fighters to properly escort you to the targets and back. Most bomber pilots get a bit bored just bombing all of the time and like to fly fighters too.

I think the very best bet is to join one of the large squadrons, like my beloved JG2, that have a group of pilots ready to fly bomber or jabo missions with fighter escorts. A good dedicated bomber pilot could really get a group of bomber pilots going from within such an existing squad and have fighter escorts to boot. Additionally, you will have a built in squadron ready to fly historical missions, which almost always include some sort of bombing, as such historical events become more popular.

Just my thoughts.

I bet a dedicated bomber squad might work if they had a dedicated escort squadron.

What Rangerbob speaks of is often how we operate within JG2.  JG2 has Tanks, Bombers, Close Air Support and CAP flying simotaneouly on the same target...it's alot of fun, and is very rewarding when all goes as planned.

Just wish there was a few more strategic targets....Bridges, Trains, etc.

Rangerbob pretty much covered it.

We started out bombers only but the time available to our guys makes any realistic attempt at doing bombers consistantly and right nearly impossible.

A minimum force of 3 bombers is required with escorts  and that just aint going to happen outside a combined group I guess.

Actually, bombers are redundant in AH, a good P47, P38. P51 mix and one C47 is all that is needed now.

Very true for airfields Sunchaser, but there's nothing like a big B17 raid to HQ or the City led by Ripsnort with properly positioned escort barriers.

Bombing can be some of the most exciting missions you've ever flown if done right.

Don't send the B17 to the scrap heap yet. The war is just starting.

The very same Ranger Bob from Airwarrior Bz with the old Rattlesden Heavy Bombardment Group.

Also used to fly Warbirds years ago, but it's been a long time since I flew there.

I've been Ranger Bob since my Army Ranger School Days.

It's good to see that SFRT here Frenchy.

I am the Adjutant for 617 RAF Dambusters (Tangmere Wing) in Warbirds.  We are in the process of coming into AH.  We are coming along with one of our Fighter Squadrons, 13RAF.

We are not coming in as a large group, but individuals are coming over as they can afford to make the switch to being in both WB and AH.

At any rate, we are here (only 3 in 617 at the moment) and are getting organized.

617RAF as you may recall, flew Lancasters in WWII.  We still fly in WB on a regular basis with Tangmere Wing.

We are excited that the Lancaster will soon be available.  In the meantime, we do very good work with the B17, and the B26.  Can usually handle C47 missions, if need be.

We fly on Thursdays regularly in AH at 2100 hrs BMT.

I am the oldest Yank in the RAF.  We look forward to meeting you all and flying with (and against) you.

About 1/3 of the Buccaneers missions are Buff.  1/3 mixed, and 1/3 fighter.
