You get what you pay for.  Play before you buy, or if you don't play yet, bring a friend who does.  Getting whatever el cheapo they happen to have on sale can create a degree of frustration that can keep you from really pursuing it.  The thing you SHOULD do online is price check - don't get screwed!

The only time I would suggest you might be okay buying a guitar online or from a catalog is if you have played the model before, like it, and it is one of the top couple of names.

Damn 3 bassist goin to the con!  I switched back to bass after a 12 year vacation on guitar :)   Though my chops aren't quite what they used to be when I played in bands.

Finding an open mic night would be fun, but it would be more fun to make one at the con ;)

Hmmm... My "Main Axe" is a 1969 Fender Telecaster Custom, all original, bought in 1986 for a whopping $100 :)

so, I beg to differ. However, deals like that ARE few and far between, and you really have to know your guitars to boot.

I would NOT buy a guitar on ebay, or anywhere sight unseen. Even if you've never played a note iin your life, you still have to hold it in your hands and get a "feel" for it before you buy.

I also have to disagree with Creamo's advice - I'd start with an acoustic guitar, rather than electric. Going from acoustic to electric is a snap, and the acoustic will instill better playing habits.

Oh and, yeah, I do play guitar, among other things :) In fact, before I moved on to producing & engineering music for a living, I made my living teaching guitar & music theory.

Acoustical electric's rule.  You can learn to play without buying all the electronic stuff right off the bat, add it to be loud after you get good enough that the neighbors won't call the cops.  :D
Bought this in the mid 60's, ... don't even ask what it's worth today.  The more it gets waxed the sweeter it sounds.

I have a Danelectro atm and love it,used to have a 1929 Martin accoustic,rosewood,why did i sell it :(
Agree with redant tho,get an accoustic to start, toughen's you up more quickly and ensures you fret note's properly...or else u get no sound :)

moose, well spoken brotha. I'm also a bassist.

Lessard is also my favorite bass player :)
was at a Dave Mathews Band concert in Staples stadium last month. The man has some mad skills. What the hell, the whole band has mad skills.

I'm saving some $ so I can buy a Warwick Dolphin, the Rolls Royce of bass guitars. Incidentally what Lessard uses, because he knows its the best there is.

Agree with Kratzer here. If you dont play, bring someone who does. Years ago when I was learning, I brought a feiend to help me pick one out. He had been playing for  a number of years and was able to explain the differences of sound/ quality/ price to me. I ended up with a Martin acoustic... cause it was what I was looking for. Heheh, and I did'nt really know it at the time.Cost about 700 bucks. But since then I have seen others that will come close ( but not "quite" the same) ranging in prices from 250- 500.  Hope this helps a little at least.

This has been my experience over the years with the exeption of the very few "$100 sweet deals"......

$200 and less = never going to stay in tune.  The intonation (sp?) will never be on.  Pick ups with have static from day one, all the hardware will rattle and may eventually fall off.  An example of these are any guitar you find in Kmart, walmart, most guitars in pawn shops or Fenders made in Japan.

$200-$400 = stays in tune with new strings once they get stretched out but the intoneation will never be spot on and the pick ups will still buzz, though maybe not at first.  IMHO these guitars make the best first guitar purchase.  As long as you stay in an climate controlled environment your axe should stay in tune for the most part.  Humidity hurst the worst with staying in tune.  A good example of this type is the Mexican made Fenders good guitars but no craftsmanship when putting them together and they use substandard parts.

$400-$700 =  ok now your getting into the good stuff.  There is still some garbage to be purchased in this price range but most of what you see is higher quality.  Guitar will stay in tune intonation can be put spot on.  All the hardware is of a higher quality.  Examples would be Jackson guitars, some fenders and some gibsons.  These are good "live" guitars.

$1000 and up = now your getting into the best of the beasts.  All hardware will be top quality and you can really feal the diference in that too.  Craftsmanship will be top notch too in assembly of the instrument.  This price range is my next purchase :)  Examples of these would be Gibson - Les Paul,  Fender - strats and tele's and custom guitars. These are great studio guitars...

There are so many guitar makers out there it can drive you batty.  I have mainly stuck with the big 2 Gibson and Fender and I have always been happy with them.  But there are many other and better guitars out there if your willing to pay the price ;)

Pawn shops are good places to find nice guitars for cheap.  However, be sure to play them first, or you could get screwed.  I bought a nice acoustic electric guitar and an acoustic electric bass from a pawn shop, and they are in great condition.
After playing on a crappy Mexican made Fender Stratocaster for 10 years, I'm finally going to be getting my dream guitar.  The Gibson SG!
