I like Creamos advice. Lots of frustrated acoustic attempters out there....
But learning on an electric is good fun.

Please. Of all the things in the AH crowd, I do in fact know this toejam.

After 12 years playing guitar I do know this. Start with an acoustic, you got 1 chance to sound hideous without cables, and you will. And for the money, a bad acoustic is indeed a given, you are going to sound bad. Enough to quit. Teachers that want all your money will claim “finger strength, and other stupid toejam”. No.

They are an instrument that just needs to be played well, completely in tune. It’s just not going to happen. The better ones can sound great, by the almost competent players. For $1000+ you’ll be in tune, and still do bad Eagles tunes impressions.

Get a mediocre electric and a half bellybutton effects processor; you can play AC/DC somewhat next week. The thing is, you will be happy by progress, and the teachers that tell you to drop the toejam and go acoustic, are still teaching ABBA songs and Hotel California while you whip out “Sanitarium” by Metallica! Plus you’ll be learning stuff that shreds!

Start electric, play electric, piss on the ABBA acoustic pay to learn tards.

Next thing you know, your playing Slayer and Rush, and chicks are not liking you.

It’s 2002 you know.

I got my first of many slaps in 1967.

And Pongo speaks the truth. When the Mel Bay note reading just drives you to bash your acoustic against the wall, you can always do a distortion wammy dive bomb on a electric and think your pretty happen'in.

Here's the bottome line-

Get a guitar that you ENJOY playing. One of the worst things that happens to a person with a lot of untapped talent, is they start out on a guitar that doesn't even tune well, it's an acoustic when they wanted Pantera, and it was plugged into the home stereo system instead of getting a proper amp (not always expensive).

First, start by deciding what kind of music you want to play, or inspires you. There's no sense in getting a classical if you want to play country. You will set yourself up for dissapointment when you realize that you bought the wrong instrrument, and then you get discouraged and never play something you could have been good at again.
Once you have decided what type of music you want to play, and what type of guitar to get (an acoustic with an internal pickup is perfect if your not sure, or have a wide variety of music that really gets your toe tapping)., then go shopping around. Play on AS MANY GUITARS AS YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON. You don't have to buy, but you will get a feel for certain brands, or body styles, etc. Some will really turn you off, and others you will want to play and play and play. Pay attention to this.
Then, when your better educated on what it is you want, start getting ready to buy. AN UNEDUCATED IMPULSE BUY IN THIS WORLD ALMOST NEVER TURNS OUT GOOD AFTER A COUPLE YEARS.

FYI-

If you go for an electric, the same rules apply for an amp, but make sure that you know what it's gonna sound like with the guitar you picked out plugged into it.

Marshal rocks but is limited IMO.

if you want the best processor/amp simulator for the money get a POD. the most awesome sounds I've ever recorded with and no need to mic the amp.

Jazz... I got into this thing a long time ago: played only 'difficult' stuff. Finally came to my senses and now I play what feels and sounds good. BUT.. jazz taught me stuff I'd have never learned playing rock. Hell, I even did a country stint. NO distortion was a new thing to me at the time

Man, I HATE the Pod. Every sound in the world, rendered totally plastic & lifeless. The only "Amp Emulator" i've found that is worth anything is the "Amp Farm" plugin for ProTools. And as good as that is, it still doesnt come that close to a good amp.

And speaking of amps - since people are listing their toys

1966 Fender Champ, blackface

1970s Fender Super Reverb, blackface

195? Fender Tweed, no name, 1 12'' - THE BEST friggin little amp I've ever owned

1968 Fender Tremoluxe Head, modified by Ron Gonzalez to where the "bright switch" now switches between two circuits: down is "'57 Bassman", up is "Marshall Plexi"

Seymor Duncan Convertible - an odd amp that i actually use a whole lot - variable power from 5 to 100 Watts, 1 15'' speaker, and lots of different tube "modules" you can stick into the amp.

Peavy "Classic 50", 2 x 12'' cones - a gigging amp - loud, indestructible & good sounding, but without much character

Gibson GA-10 - my little 10-watt tube practice amp.

"Just Say NO to Solid State!"

My guitars are a much simpler affair tho:

1969 Fender Telecaster Custom, all original, maple neck, natural wood color

1996 Custom Shop reissue of a 1962 Fender Stratocaster, powder blue, maple neck, no whammy bar ( i like my strat to stay in tune after i bend the crap out of the strings

2000 Gibson J45 Accoustic

Sadly, I once owned the jazz guitar of my dreams, and it was stolen from me - it was a 1960's Gibson L5 with a floating pickup. MAN I miss that guitar!

Buying the guitar is really the cheapest part of the deal.

It doesn't really get expensive till you start blowing off work and job interviews to focus on your destiny as a rock star.

I've worked with quite a few guys who had been 'just working here (for 20 years) till my musical career takes off.'
