Sigh........the new box is great, except for one small problem. My internet connection has gone to total dog sh*t since I built the new box. I am using the exact same modem from my old box, same settings, etc. In the old box, my connect was excellent....slow, but no lag, and good con to AH. Now I have to connect, log off, reconnect until I can get a somewhat decent connect to the net. I have discoed every time I have played AH since.

Any ideas????????

Did you change OSes?

Skuzzy would be the one to talk to on modem related issues.

Nope, exact same OS from the same disk. Everything software-wise is exactly the same. The only thing that has changed is the mobo, cpu, memory and the addition of another 40GB HD for the RAID setup. I already had the gf4 in the other box so I know it was running ok too.

I've checked for IRQ conflicts and all that happy stuff. By all rights, it should be running fine...but it ain't. I find it hard to believe my ISP went to crap....the fact the problem happened on the same day and time I put the stuff in the box is too coincedental.

Thats modems for you.
What brand? try finding new drivers.
As a modem connection tech support monkey I can tell you that when modems are connecting very slowly, its very hard to make it go faster.

No xDSL or Cable in your area?

Other than trying other drivers, I don't know what else to suggest. I will say that external modems that use the serial port are generally more reliable than internal modems in my experience.

They certainly are.
And since its a new motherboard with no ISA slot, I'm gonna assume its a winmodem.
Since winmodems depend so much on the rest of your system to operate, its very, very hard to troubleshoot.

Just what operating system are you using?

Could be an RFI issue. Internal modems can be plagued with RFI problems from surrounding support stuff on the motherboard. I bet there is some sort of harmonic the modem is sensitive too eminating from the motherboard.

Get an external modem and connect it to the good ole serial port and I bet your problems vanish.

here's an alternative u might look into go to http://www.zdnet.com/downloads and search for modem booster 3.0 it's a lil program that checks your connection to your isp and finds the best settings for optimum performance all done automatically. it even shows by how much it has improved the connection speed when it's done. maybe u'll get great results or maybe u won't see much of an improvement but it's still worth a try.
on another note u might wanna check out skurj's thread "windows is not shutting down" and try sprint's suggestion dunno if it could be a registry problem or not i'm no guru even though my major is comp sci
