I have seen references to 390 mph (schelling i think) for the flying tigers aircraft. Any word on performance figures?

dang good question. the engines on the tigers planes were factory rejects that were bluprinted to make them service worthy at all and they ended up being better than standard 40s output by quite a bit . seems like wildwing made a post to this effect.

would be a hoot.

It really doesn't matter as far as I can tell. If they give them juiced engines, someone's going to whine in here. If they give them standard engines... yep, you guessed it, someone's going to whine in here.

My money is on a standard engine, since I imagine the specs are easier to come buy, and more reliable. I mean, did Curtis ever even publish performance numbers on those engines, or was each engine unique?

Probably unique for each plane, but I bet they were consistently better than other p40bs. Go drive a blueprinted pontiac 400ci and compare it to the factory direct.

It is such an interesting group. I would not make 'all' the p40s like this, but I think the avg version could be. Maybe a most conservative estimate.

I am sure pyro will just stick to the numbers, but it brings up an important point about true historical accuracy.

In this instance it is not 'hopping up' by local mechanics it is factory direct, so I think it should be considered. Much like a different model of merlin or allison in this case. if you put an emil engine in a f4 I would love to hear the whines........

I am not sure how the pilots discerned actual airspeed, if it was even possible. Since no accurate information is available (as far as I can guess) probably wont happen. I dont think anyone would complain if they got it though. It is just as dishonest to give them an underpowered engine with evidence knowing that was not the performance of the engine in the plane as it is to give them the appropriate engine power with little if only anecdotal evidence.

In one case you are just plain wrong, and in the other you are indefensible but probably right.

Most of the other planes in the game got souped up in the field or elsewhere too. But all the other games in the plane are based on standard performance charts. I don't know why they would break this pattern for the P-40.

Thats what I mean though, this is not local 'hopping up'. This was a set of engines sent to these guys that really kicked arse. I am sure in the field these guys even pushed em further considering what kind of conditions they were working under.

All I can do is hope.

The engine in the A.V.G. Hawk was the STANDARD factory one for that production run. While it was not standard for other production runs, ALL the A.V.G. Hawks had that engine.
It was not a field mod.
It was not a flight chief "hop-up".
It was not a drop-in update ala M.C. 202's to M.C.205 specs.

The standard production A.V.G. Hawk had a standard engine built for it. A real hot one, but STANDARD.

Do you want a DB 601A in your Bf 109F?

As to the speed, I think it was in the 375 mph range in level flight. Check the old posts by Widewing and I.

I dont think there is any dispute about it being standard, but it was blueprinted. Honed, hand touched to get everything to fit together (cause they didnt before). Thus clearences were fantasticly small etc. In another words much extra horsepower.

The difference from the field touch ups is that this is the way the engines were delivered to the avg from the factory.

I am only getting this from that interview that is posted all over this bbs, and his little memorial website.
