New PC blues
« on: June 18, 2002, 06:32:16 PM »
I just purchased a brand new PC.  Here are its specs:

P4 2.0Ghz
512 RAM
100 Gig Hard drive
64 MB DDR ATI Radeon 7000

I also have an older computer:

P4 1.3Ghz
512 RAM
40 Gig Hard drive (only 40% free)
32 MB Geforce 2 GTS/PRO

On the old computer, I get a frame rate of about 75 inside the tower offline.  However, on the new computer, which has superior hardware, I only get 18-21.  Both computers are using the excact same video settings on Aces High.  The old one runs XP pro, the new one XP home.  Does anyone have any clue as to why I'm getting poor frame rates on the new computer, while getting excellent ones with the old one?

Did that already to no avail. Frankly I'm stumped. This has happened with two consecutive PCs. Did I accidently fall onto a "gem" with the old 1.3gig machine? I just can't believe the performace can be so poor with the new machines. Not only did they have superior processor speeds, but 64meg video cards vs the 32meg.

At any rate, the new 2.gig goes back to the store this week. Lol, I know they're not going to be happy to see me walking in with a second new PC to return.  Best Buy and their 14 day return policy can't be beat.

The bottleneck in both systems is the video card.  The reason for the performance difference is that the GF 2 Pro is a faster card than a Radeon 7000.  The amount of video memory is a non issue.  There is something else going on here as well, the Radeon card should do better than that.  (That P4 2 Ghz system isn't a Compaq, HP, Gateway, or an eMachines is it? )

This is one of my complaints with name brand PCs.  They always bundle obsolete video cards with their systems and mislead the consumer by quoting only the amount of video memory.

Have you tried applying that "patch" for the fixed refresh rate in XP on the new box?  I'm sure they didn't install it on the machine from the store....

Just a suggestion....

Yeah. Get a pal who knows about PC's (This is what I do). Check there is no crap running in the background. Brand name PC's are notorious for bundling all sorts of crap. Fax's, Utilities.etc. make sure they are not running. Even MS Offfice products slow down the PC. What is the sound card? It can cause problems. What is the Mother board?

Your machine should be better than that, though it is possible that the GTS is still faster than the Radeon 7000.

If you do take it back, go to a specialist gaming PC store (We have Overclockers UK  http://www.overclockers.co.uk) who will supply a mean game machine with overclosking capabilities.

Good luck:D
