Very big loss for the St.Louis area and "Cardinal Nation".I grew up listening to him as my dad and grandpa both did.Most people around here turned the volume off on the t.v. and tuned in kmox radio to listen.
But he was the nicest most down to earth guy you would ever want to meet.Did so much charity work it's unreal,and he really got involved.He didn't just lend his name to something and disappear.So many stories of him stopping and helping people on a personal level.Every Christmas he would visit the local vetran hospitals and stay for hours talking and handing out Cardinal stuff.He also earned the Purple Heart at Remagen in WWII.
Sad day and a great man even if you leave out the sports stuff.
Big memorial service in the morning on the warning track in center field at Bush Stadium and open to the public.How fitting.
